Default New TLC show - One Big Happy Family

So, this should be interesting...

TLC orders 'One Big Happy Family' obese family reality series
By Christopher Rocchio, 07/20/2009

A family of morbidly obese Americans will reportedly be the focus of a new reality series.

TLC has ordered a new Little People, Big World-like reality series that will instead follow a morbidly obese family as they deal with everyday obstacles in their lives, The Hollywood Reporter reported Sunday.

"Little People, Big World is about little people living in a big world. This is about big people living in a little world -- fat people living in a skinny world," RDF USA executive Mike Duffy, who created the show, told The Reporter.

Tentatively-titled One Big Happy Family, the series will chronicle a family that lives just outside Charlotte, NC and consists of a 40-year-old man weighing 340 lbs.; his 35-year-old wife, who is close to 400 lbs.; and their 330 and 340 lbs. teenage kids, according to The Reporter.

Duffy said the series will have each cast member tell their stories in first person and added it will pay special attention to the children -- a boy and a girl.

"High school is hard enough to deal with -- imagine what it would be like to be morbidly obese," he told The Reporter.

Despite a desire to shed unwanted weight, Duffy stated that One Big Happy Family will have few other similarities to NBC's The Biggest Loser.

"This is not a game show where contestants have TV trainers and obesity specialists everyday as they are competing for a $250,000 prize," he told The Reporter.

"This is a very loving family. They are dedicated to losing the weight because they communicate as well as love each other so much."

Duffy said the idea for the show originated from his own family experiences -- including having a father who at age 60 lost 200 lbs..

"Growing up, we had a problem with obesity, and I know how it feels to be fat," he told The Reporter, adding "watching television, it occurred to me that there is a void for programming where we deal with obesity in the family unit."

TLC has ordered six half-hour episodes of the series, which is being produced by RDF USA.

More TLC shit. Fantastic. TLC is like, the most cleverly disguised freak show. Not that I think the people are freaks but clearly TLC does. They pick a few families who stick out (at least to them) and then they shove them in front of a camera to reveal the details of their life with some sort of mushy message of hope and family togetherness. BLAH.

ETA: I'm so mad I wasted my 4000th post on this stupid show.

I saw a trailer for this show this afternoon, which featured such clips as one of the kids expressing disbelief at her mother's suggestion that she get some exercize, and one of somebody breaking a chair. The only thing it was missing was tuba music.

No kidding. I especially enjoyed how they blurred out the nipples of whatever man appeared onscreen with out a shirt. I'm just going to assume that his "moobs" were too much for America to handle. Way to emasculate him by comparing his body to a woman, TLC, not to mention discriminate...I highly doubt Brad Pitts nipples would be blurred.

Ugh.

So it's sort of like the paysite board?

I may watch the first episode out of curiosity, but lines like "dedicated to losing the weight" make me doubt this series will set a good example for fat acceptance. Maybe a truly fat-positive show is too boring for dramatic television, or goes against TV producers' pre-conceived notions.

I can basically summarize how this series will go.

-introductions (which will include official weights that will must likely be attached to their names from the get go) and how loving they are
-a few chinks in their positive demeanors
-full scale breakdowns that are centered around their weight "problems," which will no doubt include how the teenagers feel unattractive and how the parents feel like they're "killing" their kids
-"revelations" about unhealthy lifestyles and how they need to drastically change their lives
-the road to "better" lives so that they can all be a truly happy family

by the way, sorry about all the quotations.

Ah, yes, yet another entry in the "Ignorant Fat People Are Funny!" hall of shame. I really wish they'd stop pretending and just call the show "A Family of Fat Fucks Fails at Life." I wouldn't mind the arrogance so much if they'd just drop the pretensions of "helping."

I mean, sure, it's inspiring in about the same way as seeing a nurse with Down's syndrome. Sure, she worked hard to get where she is, but at the end of the day she was hired to fulfill a quota.

Sorry for the tangent, but... was this purely to illustrate a point, or are there actually nurses with Down's syndrome? I'm really stuck on this.
