HFC, do you mean to ask why those threads are in Hyde Park, specifically? If so, Hyde Park is for soapboxing, threads which are or might become contentious, and rule-breaking posters who've failed to heed a warning are put in "Special Ed" and confined to Hyde Park for a time, so any thread they'd like to launch would have to be here.

I think I know what HFC means. She apparently thinks of the Hyde Park forum as being just for opinions, especially political ones, after the pattern of its namesake. If you accept that premise the question then rises as to whether some of these threads would be better placed in another forum.

The answer is that this premise is itself open to discussion and perhaps too limiting. Hyde Park is indeed becoming the default political and social issues forum, but this is by action of the community that uses these boards. The real point was initially simply an experimental place to put threads that were so filled with controversy, conflict and uproar that they were disrupting other forums.

The issue was raised almost from the beginning. Someone said "establishing a political forum instead of one on health issues?" Actually it wasn't supposed to be seriously political; it was a response to another need. How to define and moderate the Health and Life Style Forum is something Conrad is still evaluating but he does want to do; as for a serious Fine Arts and Social Issues Forum, that is not even on the drawing boards given the direction Hyde Park has taken.

So, to the original question, the appropriateness of these threads being in this forum rather than elsewhere was a decision of their originators. Some could possibly be moved elsewhere, but moderators recognize that there are certain "posters on probation" who would then be unable to contribute to them (yes, some are restricted just to posting here). And maybe that is the true "final answer?"

I'm also wondering if there should be a GLTB board so that certain people from that group are not tempted to troll and hijack political discussions.

p.s. Eaty should have been spelled Edie so those who fail to get most of the obnoxious avatars/quotes/comments still wouldn't get it...

I'm not trying to be a shit-stirrer but I'm sincerely curious as to whether the Dims "problem child" will eventually be able to come out of "solitary confinement" or if he'll be stuck in limbo for the rest of his time here?

The GLTB comment was referring to a specific group of LTB, their college kid sheep, and a few others who come out of the woodwork to pick at things posted by Conservatives, Christians, and Republicans.

They obviously can't offer an intelligent opinion or debate, so they personally attack.
