Default I Love the United States of America

I admit that the United States has a great many problems. Many of these problems are deadly serious, while others are truly silly. A great many of our problems are imaginary or invented, some are exaggerated. Some of our most hotly debated problems are really nothing more than a matter of opinion.

Still, with all the problems with my country, I love America. I believe that this is the greatest nation in the world.

I do not expect everyone in the world to agree with me. Heck, I don't even expect all Americans to agree with me on this. I will say that I have left this country several times, and probably could have stayed away if I chose. Leaving America is very easy, particularly if you are unhappy here. On a related note, I have never been to another nation which has the same difficulty with people illegally entering that nation and staying there as is the case with the United States. Surely that must serve as evidence that there is SOMETHING to love about this nation...

Many people here in Hyde Park wail and bemoan the state of my beloved nation, and they spend their time here putting forth ideas and suggestions of how to solve these problems. Even in the frequent cases when I disagree with these posters, I respect the fact that they aren't just whining because they want some internet attention. They have a specific goal in mind, and this forum somehow plays a part in achieving that goal. I applaud these people and wish them well, though I do not always wish them success.

Other people are not held in the same esteem. These other people make quite a production tearing at their clothes and gnashing their teeth about how America and her citizens are horrid monsters without virtue. The complaints of these posters appear without any goal other than to garner the attention they surely lacked as children. The internet affords them the protection of anonymity so that they can not be held accountable for whatever venomous tirade they launch. Why would anyone launch a hateful complaint about nation so many people love, except for the internet equivalent "Mom! Hey Mom! Watch me, Mommy!" As for these people, I merely wish that they would choose to shut up.

A poster who recently put forth the startling idea that it's bad that there are homeless people. He couched this beneath a title which was a direct attack upon the character of the nation so many of us dearly love. The title of his post interestingly came from a movie starring someone from another country who now lives in America. In this post and for pages after it, he never once gave forth any idea of how to solve this issue. Everyone is well aware of the homeless problem in America, so his post was hardly informative. His post asked no question, so it did not seek to gather information. Given the lack of these elements, and couched as it was, it was less of an actual complaint than an attention-seeking whine.

America certainly has a great many problems, no one can really argue that point. There are many ways that we can all work to solve many of these problems. Voting in elections is the easiest, but then taking the time to write to your elected officials is even more important. Placing financial pressure on corporations is another means of achieving positive change, as is rewarding companies and organization who are doing good things. Using forums such as this one to spread your ideas and methods of change can be a very valuable resource when these avenues are properly utilized. If you complain, complain with a purpose. All of these examples are closely tied to Americans' Freedom of Speech. When utilized properly, that freedom is the greatest tool of advancement available to us.

Americans have the Constitutionally guaranteed right to whine and complain. I am honestly glad that they do. But when a person uses his freedom of speech to merely run down this nation to no further purpose, then he has shamefully misused that right. When he sets aside his intellectual capacity to be helpful, informative, or inquisitive for the sake of mewling for attention, he should hang his head in shame.

Who the hell said I didn't love this country -- I do -- and have done more than most for this country (I have the honorable discharge papers to prove it). At the present time I look upon American like a beloved person in need of intervention (a big powerful belligerent person). Sometimes people you love, who are on a downward self destructive spiral, need a wake-up call -- that's exactly what I try to do every chance I get. If I didn't love this country I wouldn't care.

And by the way since I am also a Canadian citizen I can leave anytime I like. I stay because I don't think America is a lost cause yet. I stay and fight for the liberties conservatives only pay lip service to while they push us ever closer to a police state.

Rebel -- lets turn your tactics around -- what have you done to protect the United States today? I spent most of today (and I'm sure much of the next few weeks) helping a kid who was denied his constitutional right to confront his accuser (remember its in the Sixth Amendment).

I like the idea of America. Well some of it anyway. Well my interpretation of some of those ideas of America. Thats about as close as it gets for me, given I don't actually live there. And since I don't want to start an international pissing competition (again), I'll say no more.

No offense, but to be honest I get sick of the " America is the best country in the world" line that often gets trotted out by some Americans.

It is a great country, but so are so many other countries.

I think we as Americans are just very sheltered creatures and for the most part we don't even see the rest of the world to even appreciate what we have. Everyone needs to leave this continent and see what the rest of the world is like. I mean seriously..Germany has no syrup! No mac and cheese! How do they live?

There is no nation called America. There is the United States of America. Remember Canadians, Mexicans and all the other peoples in the Western Hemisphere are also Americans.

To the question at hand; I too love my country the United States of America.

Of course, I am happily biased in my viewpoint.

Yeah whatever.

The sentiment remains the same. I get sick of hearing about how " The United States of America" is the best country in the world.

It is one great country amongst many.

As a Canadian, I'm mostly agreeing with Matt. But I do want to also give a nod to our southern neighbor for having crafted a set of ideals that is truly excellent (in the form of your constitution and bill of rights), and for honestly trying to live up to them for the most part. There are countries that are pretty good places at one time or another but without much in the way of guiding ideals, there are countries that have fine sounding ideals but don't make much of an effort to live up to them.....the USA really has been the guilding light of the world for over two centuries at setting high ideals and making a pretty good go of pursuing them.

No place is perfect, but the American system holds the country to account for its imperfections better than most, and people seem to care about those imperfections more than in most places.

That is far from the worst thing one could say about a place

I love the United States. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Having said that: In my opinion, our greatest problem is arrogance. "American exceptionalism" is the belief that the US is different and therefore better. This may well have been true in the past, but it is no longer true. It is no longer true because the "exceptionalism" has gone to our collective head. One of our national boasts used to be "We don't start wars, we end them" and that is no longer true either. Most of our current problems can be traced to overconfidence and arrogance, overestimating how important we are in the world. We were due a slice of humble pie.

I've often wondered how the nation be called the United STATES of America when there's 45 states, 4 commonwealths - Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, and Massachusetts - and the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations? Could it be because it's shorter than the United States, Commonwealths, and Providence Plantations of America?

In the US, a "commonwealth" is indistinguishable from a "state." It's semantics. The name "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" came about due to the merger of two colonies. Rhode Island, and Providence Plantations. Providence Plantations is now the city of Providence.

So it's ok for you to have pride as an Australian, but it's annoying when someone from the U.S. thinks that the greatest country is the United States?
