Default GLBTQ news tidbits

I feel that a lot of this news doesn't get covered widely, and that it is important to remember that there is a lot of progress happening in the world, despite how far there is to go in many places. Feel free to add your own pointers to news others might enjoy seeing.

First election of an openly trans state legislature member

I was pretty excited to see Danica Roem's win in Virginia

Not going to get into the politics of it all, but go look it up if you are interested and hadn't heard.

Being gay getting better in rural UK?

From the Economist:

"A study of British pornography-viewing habits makes it possible to see where gay people live. Data from listings websites reveal where events catering specifically to gay or bisexual people take place. Put together, these datasets suggest that lots of gay people live in rural areas of Britain without much sign of their presence. But thanks to a reduction in bigotry and the rise of specialist dating apps, they are increasingly visible"

Hurray for Delegate Roem! I am in awe of her skills and chutzpah. When reporters asked about her opponent after she won, Delegate Roem said:

Quote:
"I don't attack my constituents. Bob is my constituent now."
This is the most polite yet devastating burn I've heard in a long time. Bravo!

Things looking up Down-Under

In a national vote, 62% of Australians voted yes to the question "Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?" The Prime Minister has promised a parliamentary vote to legalize gay marriage by Christmas.

Beyond those things, Trump's ban on transgender troops in the military has been blocked, at least until such time as court cases against it are settled.

The German Federal Constitutional Court has ruled that a third gender must be introduced in all official documents - or any mention of gender abolished. Deadline end of 2018.

Let's hope Germany gets a government until then....

That's excellent! But yeah I've been hearing rumblings about the German government... hope it doesn't go south.

This has now passed through the senate - all amendments were defeated - , and will be going to the lower house soon. Fingers crossed there will be legislation by Christmas. We aren't expecting any issues in the lower house as Lab, Greens and some of the crossbench are all in favour of a bill with no amendments, as are at least 2 Coalition MPs, and likely more.
