The fundamental aspect of being an male FA, and adoring larger women, is respect for those women. As such, I think it's important to take a moment and recognize the anniversary of America's first "All-Girl" radio station.
Not 1000 beautiful pounds but 1000 beautiful watts. October 29, 1955 WHER took to the airwaves. Lot's of guts for 1955 and good job ladies! For more information, here's a link: http://www.npr.org/about/press/991025.wher.html Enjoy |

Fascinating...
And now, a moment of silence for broadcast radio, in its final death throes due to FCC deregulation and corporate monopolies in major markets. |

WHER was owned by Sam Phillips. It was one of his investments outside of Sun records. Another was Holiday Inns Of America.

Well, I didn't intent to place this thread in this form. Oh well, such is life.
Sam Phillips was Elvis' original recording manager. He sold off Elvis just as he was getting really famous (some say Sam didn't want to be a one name lable) to fund WHER. |

Sam Phillips sold Presley's contract because he was in debt and owed Presley money and Cololnial Tom was breathing down his neck. He received 35 thousand from RCA. Atlantic also placed a bid and came close but they just didn't have the money to compete with RCA. With the 35 K in 1955 dollars he was able to buy out his partners (Brother Judd being one) and pay off his debts. Also at that time he was just starting to record Johnny Cash & Jerry Lee Lewis as well as carl Perkins and Roy Orbison so for a small company their promotional abilities were stretched to the limits.I believe Sams wife Becky was on the air staff at WHER and of course prior to opening Sun Sam worked in Memphis radio for WREC.

Speaking of radio-stations.
I believe this is a factoid..tell me if I am wrong, though: East of the Mississippi river, radiostations, t.v. stations start with a "W" examples: WRAL, WECT, WKRP and West of the Mississippi river examples: KLAX soooo is it true?

"East of the Mississippi river, radiostations, t.v. stations start with a "W" examples: WRAL, WECT, WKRP
and West of the Mississippi river examples: KLAX soooo is it true?" It is true that 99% of the radio stations in this country which are east of the Mississippi, however there are always exceptions. KYW in Philadelphia (A call sign which ws moved from Cleaveland many years ago, KQV & KDKA, Pittsburgh, WOAI, San Antonio, WOI & WIBW, Topeka WBAP Dallas/Ft Worth. There are others but the one thing these stations have in common is that they are very old and where issued call signs prior to the East/West law.
