Angry 'Super Congress': Debt Ceiling Negotiators Aim To Create New Legislative Body

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- Debt ceiling negotiators think they've hit on a solution to address the debt ceiling impasse and the public's unwillingness to let go of benefits such as Medicare and Social Security that have been earned over a lifetime of work: Create a new Congress.

This "Super Congress," composed of members of both chambers and both parties, isn't mentioned anywhere in the Constitution, but would be granted extraordinary new powers. Under a plan put forth by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his counterpart Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), legislation to lift the debt ceiling would be accompanied by the creation of a 12-member panel made up of 12 lawmakers -- six from each chamber and six from each party.

Legislation approved by the Super Congress -- which some on Capitol Hill are calling the "super committee" -- would then be fast-tracked through both chambers, where it couldn't be amended by simple, regular lawmakers, who'd have the ability only to cast an up or down vote. With the weight of both leaderships behind it, a product originated by the Super Congress would have a strong chance of moving through the little Congress and quickly becoming law. A Super Congress would be less accountable than the system that exists today, and would find it easier to strip the public of popular benefits. Negotiators are currently considering cutting the mortgage deduction and tax credits for retirement savings, for instance, extremely popular policies that would be difficult to slice up using the traditional legislative process.

...Of the Government, By the Government, For the Government...

We don't need a fast track to new laws. There's a reason why there are constitutional procedures in place that take time and debate on the floor of both houses (unlike ObamaCare that never saw any debate and was never discussed, "..we need to pass the bill to see what's in it.." )

I would predict that in short order they'll eliminate the election process to staff the Congress and the POTUS. They'll just get the Super Congress to do it.

If this passes its over folks. The Constitution that was supposed to protect from the government will have been permanently bypassed and the balance of power broken.

Even if this doesn't pass the people who thought it up should be removed from office. The contempt they have for our system of governance is remarkable. They aren't fit to lead us if they can't do so inside of our existing framework.

This is why arguments about Democrats and Republicans are useless. They want us bickering over parties while they continue to run our country into the ground. They ALL need to be removed from power, they are corrupt and there is no hope for us with them running the show.

I don't think they can just arbitrarily do this.

The Constitution has been viewed as more and more of an impediment to government of the past decade or so. So many things have undermined its power over government that they believe they can do whatever they want and the voting public won't care.

I don't understand why people are having a problem? Technically this would be a joint committee of the Congress. For example, there is a United States Joint Committee on Taxation. A committee composed of five members of the Senate Finance Committee and five from the House Ways and Means Committee.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...ee_on_Taxation

Joint committees are not new.

Also, fast track bills and treaties are also common.

In the end both chambers still must vote on the bills created by this committee and the President must sign them.

Get rid of the debt ceiling and replace it with a fiscal percentage spending cap on the annual budget. Simple solution to the problem immediately. Then the tax increases and spending cuts can begin along with real structural reform.

I'm getting to the point where I think we should just let it burn. Screw the deadline, don't raise the debt ceiling, and let the whole damn house of cards come crashing down. Sure we'll take the world with us, but what the hell? The whole world is corrupt to the core. Let it burn too.

Congratulations! Looks like the USA is about to acquire the equivalent of the European Commision, and your legislatures are about to begin the long journey to become the same kind of more or less impotent rubber stamp that the Euro Parliament is! You too will get to enjoy the thrill of living under a small cabal of unaccountable commisars!
/sarcasm

N.B.
Fun fact: The Unfree Kingdom TWICE refused Neil Kinnock's bid to become PM in national elections. He was APPOINTED a European Commisioner (one of the 27 people who have a HUGE say in how the nascent superstate is run) and has held that position for considerably more than a decade.

Heck, at the rate we're going we'll be under IMF supervision if the President doesn't break out some 14th Amendment* whoop-@ss to keep things going.

*or its functional equivalent, such as noting that where two duly passed laws conflict, the later one takes precedence (and the budget was passed after the renewal of the debt ceiling act).
