An old guy called his doctor and complained of constipation. The doctor advised him to go to his pharmacy and get a suppository laxative and use it for a couple days, then call if he needed further help. It sounds like she's made up her mind to go to Belgium, which is good. Some people are indecisive and tend to become Belgian Wafflers <rim shot>. Therefore I'm sure she'll be okay.

The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society sounds like a blast, pun fully intended. Since you and I share a love of classical music, and you've already filled up on Bach and dynamite, here's some "near Bach" to continue the musical birthday festivities. Bach remains one of the supreme masters of music, although personally I respond more to his contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). Bach and Telemann were personally acquainted, and Händel and Telemann were friends who subscribed to each other's music. Telemann was the most popular composer in Europe at the time, and his music is full of personality. It still sounds amazingly fresh, like these Baroque romps.

Time travel forward two centuries and skip to another continent. Here's some fascinating music inspired by Bach — from Brazil! Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lôbos (1887-1959) loved Bach and composed 9 suites entitled Bachianas Brasileiras — Portuguese for Brazilian Bachianas. These range from very Bachian in nature to very Brazilian and everything in between. Here is one of his more exuberant pieces, scored for an ensemble made up entirely of cellos. The performers look like they have some dancing and dynamite in their veins.

Or if you prefer something more traditional, this sounds almost like a Stokowski orchestral transcription of a stately and mysterious Bach fugue, but it's entirely original. It begins slowly and quietly, and Villa-Lôbos gradually builds it to an intensity that sounds best when I turn the volume up to eleven. When the sustained massive final chord trips all the car alarms in a 2-block radius, it's loud enough.

The thing about birthdays - it's always nice to have one and to be honored for the wisdom and perspicacity which come with age (well, I really, really know how to load a dishwasher) but do I really have to have so many of them? They seem to be coming faster too.

This one sorta got clobbered by Mrs Ho Ho's business trip to Europe, a ten day affair. We got in a brief celebration, sort-of reprised a lot of little things that have meaning for us, including a short, but lovely, bike ride in the warm October sun, with an ice cream cone at one end of it.

We will celebrate again when she arrives safely home, but don't need a lot other than to be in each others arms again - oh, and some Belgian chocolate, if she can get it through customs. (If not, she'll just have to eat it on the spot - all five pounds of it - heh heh.)
