Default 90s Bands / Concerts

I see music threads all over this joint, but none in the 30s. I was prime for the "Grunge" era, living in Seattle... I seen a lot of fun bands that were 'no bodies' at that time. I want to know what music you remember, concerts you went to, etc.

I seen Nirvana in Aberdeen before they were "Nirvana." I remember being snuck into the Pour House bar in Aberdeen, when they too were underage and playing.

I've met and hung out with Drop Kick Murphys, Violent Femmes, and Flogging Molly.

I met Zeke, Death Cab for Cutie...

Zeke! Neat, I have a couple of their records but never saw them live...

I never liked grunge, to be honest. I only started to appreciate Nirvana a few years ago. I was into hardcore punk when grunge hit, it was so strange to see the instant style transformation. The 80's really became the 90's. All of a sudden more people started showing up at our gigs too.

As for bands, I saw a lot of obscure bands but a few better known ones too. Fugazi a couple of times, COC, NOFX, Jawbreaker. Got to see Sepultura open for Ozzy on the Roots tour. I'm glad to have seen the original lineup that night.

I missed more good shows than I saw...

Same here. Still saw a shit ton, though.

Best concerts of the 90's:

Marilyn Manson (1996) - easily the best show ever, despite not being the best band
Tool (saw them on Undertow and Lateralus tours in the 90's)
NIN
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
Ministry
Skinny Puppy
GWAR
Gob
The Casualties
KMFDM
Alice Cooper (he played my small, shitty hometown!)
APC (before Mer de Noms came out...they played the whole album as a preview)
Blind Guardian (have seen them 3 times, but the first was in the 90's)
The Prodigy

I'm not in my 30's, nor was I all that cool in my musical tastes, but a couple of 90s concert memories anyway.

Early 90s I spent a couple of years working in Montreal, while my girlfriend was in Kitchener-Waterloo; far enough away that we saw each other only once a month. At first I sulked in my apartment a lot, but eventually I started enjoying the city some more, and went to some concerts on my own. A couple stand out in memory:

- Melissa Etheridge at the St. Denis theatre, '92. A friend and I were big fans of her, and were going to see her in Ottawa (where the friend lived) a couple of nights later, but I was bored and I heard that there were a few tickets left, so I jumped on the metro and went to the concert in Montreal. It was the first time I'd gone to a concert on my own, and I found that I actually kind of liked that. No need to keep track of other people, how they are doing, etc--could just get totally lost in the music. I was just so in the moment that I don't really remember any of the details, just that I really enjoyed it.

- In the summer of '92 went to a big outdoor music fest in Montreal, again on my own. I don't remember most of who played anymore, although I remember I enjoyed much of it. But the final two bands were Midnight Oil and The Tragically Hip. If felt like the two bands were competing, with Midnight Oil really cooking instrumentally, and Gord Downie of The Hip getting much more political than he normally does. I liked both bands but wouldn't have called myself a hardcore fan by any means; but it really felt like both bands were trying to prove something, and stepped it up beyond their usual, making it a very cool evening.

I was really huge into the whole Lilith Fair as well. I had the chance to meet and talk with Eryka Badu. . that pretty much kicked ass. She's a down to earth, healthy thinking, real beautiful woman.

@Melian- my band opened up for Gob at a gig in my crappy hometown. Not a great show, but pretty good. Also, I saw Marilyn Manson in 2001 in TO opening for Black Sabbath. I never liked his music, and I still don't, but what a crazy show. Sick!

Another great show I saw was the Misfits at the Opera House on their first reunion tour without Danzig. I think it was in '97. Just an awesome show! Jerry Only punched a guy out. It was a real violent gig. Good times! I got to shake Jerry's hand later on when I saw them play in Montreal at Foufounes Electriques. One of the few times I was actually nervous to approach someone sort of famous. A freakin' Misfit! Awesome.

Sweet, you opened for Gob. When I saw them, it wasn't that their performance was amazing or anything (it was Gob...), but the energy at the show was great. As for Manson, I liked his first few albums and this concert happened before he had really released anything terrible. Combine that with a completely insane audience and very theatrical stage show, and the concert ended up being the best ever.

Oh, and that's odd....I JUST saw Misfits at the Opera House 2 weeks ago. Haha. Well, what remains of them.

Is it still the Jerry/Dez/Marky lineup? I sort of lost interest after Doyle left...

One last Misfits note...when I saw them in Mtl, Marky Ramone's band opened up for them. Up to that point I, naively, had no idea Marky wore a wig. That was NOT his own hair. I was devastated...

Oh, I've completely lost interest, too, but felt that I had to see them live at least once (I always missed them due to exams or other bad timing). Honestly, I have terrible vision and didn't notice any wigs, although they all looked like spiky blurs. I was also kind of busy getting punched
