Default Monique's new show?

I only saw part of a commercial for a show coming up on Oxygen called Monique's Fat Chance. It appears to be fat friendly, but none of the women seem to be SSBBWs.

Anyone have info/opinions on this?

I don't know about the show per se, but I know they were having some kind of online contest for it where you could rate women who wanted to be on the show based on their pictures and what they had to say. I remember seeing a few familiar faces on the website, but I know nothing of the show really.

I haven't seen the commercial but its not suprising to me that SSBBW wouldn't be represented. After all thin is in...

If you are gonna have a show about fat women to even be able to market it I would imagine that they would have to have the smallest possible fat women on the show. Not only for the thin folks in society but also for the fat folks. Lets face it MOST (note I said most, not all) fat people want to lose weight. They aren't going to watch a show where 400 pound women are shown as sexy and desirable, its much more believable for them to see a woman that weighs 250 in a beauty contest.

As great as I think the concept for this kind of show is, I think its only doing a disservice to fat people. Its not completely representative of fat people if they only show the size 20/22 girls and some of the larger women feel like they have to look like those women to be pretty.

Yep it's a pageant - she's hosted one previously too, last year maybe. That one did so well, they're allowing another. While it's a step in the right direction, all of the women were both tall and not over 22/24 from what I saw. The media keeps using the term "statuesque." Like most beauty pageants, all of us aren't reflected (sigh) but it's nice to see it nonetheless.

When, oh WHEN will we short, fat chicks ever be noticed???

This is year two for "Mo'Nique's Fat Chance" beauty pageant. We talked about this last year... are ya gonna make me search posts? hehe..

Last year they had at least one woman who was an ssbbw. She was lovely.

I think there was at least one other that might fit into the ssbbw category. When I get some energy ('twas a long day), I'll search posts. We had links to last years show that might still work.

I don't see posts from August/November when the original show aired and re-ran, but here's a link that Wilson Barbers posted to his weblog where he discussed the first show in depth: http://www.dimensionsmagazine.com/fo...14&postcount=2

Last year they had some bigger girls. It was a really good start, although the girl who won was a 14/16 IIRC. I guess this is what happens when you allow the public to vote - you get smaller women.

Last time Monique(not me..the other one ) held that beauty pageant, both my roomie(male) and myself knew which women were going to be in the final 2..long before the final drumroll was thumped. We knew that those two women were 'acceptable'.

I was hoping one of the rounder women would be in the final two, but I knew there was no chance in hell they would be.I don't even know if I think the show is a step in any kind of 'right' direction.I understand the pressure to be palatable to the senses that would be soooo horrified to see a belly that hangs, but I am just tired of it...truly.

They had better damn well have an over size 24 in the top two!!Just throw 'us' that bone..I am serious.I know I am not going to get a perfect contest..hell it is a BEAUTY contest, but exposure of this kind can at least have the very large women sitting at home watching, feel herself walking a little bit taller the day after the show.

even though i did like the last show for the most part, most of the women were not over perhaps 22/24, but there was one particular female who was about a size 26 and looked like she could be classified as an 'SSBBW.' of course, she didn't win. With most 'plus size' models they are not over 18/20, and tend to be quite tall, which then allows for a less 'complicated, more distributed' sense of their weight... Meaning, no rolls... I think it just goes to show that things are not always what they seem.

but i still liked the show, and am going to watch the next one. i commend all of the women that tried out and made it on the previous show, because i dont think i could have done that....i'd probably have major stage fright!

Not to hijack but I was watching the BET Awards tonight (that's right... the BET Awards) and Mo'Nique was a presenter and was a riot. Plus... she's HOT

Anyone know if she's been snatched up? Hey, one can dream!

Well if that is true, she puts on a good act. Her site's links page is loaded down with a number of size - acceptance sites. This include NAAFA, BigFatBlog, Dimensions, and etc.

She is also wrote a book about size acceptance, and throws out fat friendly messages in her interviews.

Okay, her views about size acceptance seems to be mostly for the women, but I haven't seen signs that it is not for real.

Closest thing to a patron saint when you think about Kirstie Alley, Kelly Price et al., who all mentioned about having plus-sized clothing lines and support systems set up just to have them fade to a non existent afterthought as we presently speak.
