I've been enjoying the thread that Webmaster started about the enduring quality of music from the 60's. I love classic rock and would add music from the early 70's as well.
I'm curious to hear the personal stories about your favorite groups, concerts you attended or what the music meant to you then. Webmaster talked about Leonard Cohen, someone that went completely under my radar. I listened to one of Cohen's YouTube videos and liked it. So share you stories and YouTube videos. This will be fun! I saw Simon and Garfunkle in concert in Chicago in the late 60's. There was a huge crowd and they were on a bare stage, sitting on wooden stools. Nothing flashy, just playing their guitars and making great music. I did find a early video, Sound of Silence <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9hUy9ePyo6Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> The embed code is not showing the video in preview, so I'll include the link too. I don't know how to show a video in a comment. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hUy9...eature=related What a pleasure it is to see and hear them again. |

Had I known what I know now about the enduring value of 60s music, I'd have gone to more concerts back then when all those bands were in their prime. As is, of the majors I saw the Rolling Stones twice, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, Carlos Santana, Eric Burden and the Animals, and the Moody Blues.

Money was a big issue for me in the late 60's and early 70's. I remember seeing the Supremes with Diana Ross and Simon and Garfunkle then. I saw Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefers in a very small, intimate auditorium at the University of Illinois in 1972 or so. That is a wonderful memory because he sounded great and it was such an intimate setting. He talked to us ~ very laid back of course. I saw him a few short years later when he opened for the Eagles and their huge speakers distorted his music. I saw Santana in the late 90's. Fabulous as always. I saw Arlo Gutherie in the 1980's at a very small concert setting. His hair was graying, but he sounded, acted and looked the same. Boy, did that take me back. I loved it. I also saw Don McLean there one time.
I'm so impressed with all of you! |

Another thing that all this makes me remember is stereos. Back in the early 70s, a big stereo was really the biggest status symbol in anyone's apartment or home. The more buttons and dials and lights the better. And the speakers had to be huge. I so remember walking into someone's place and seeing their giant stereo component system.
Today, where did all those giant speakers go? Now it's all iPods and, at the most, a little external sound system. Even "home theaters" are wimpy compared to those massive sounds systems of yore. I wonder if some time from now people will look back and wonder about this era's obsession with ever larger flatscreens. Perhaps they'll simply put on viewing glasses, or perhaps make the wall of the room light up with video. |

Was Pete Seeger. If I remember correctly I saw him in concert twice. I still have some of his music and still can sing bits and pieces of some of his songs.
Louise and I are trying to learn one song as a duet. The chorus goes: How do I know my youth is all spent, My get up and go has got up and went, But in spite of it all I'm able to grin, And think of the places my get up has been. It also goes: Now old age is golden so I've heard said, But sometimes I wonder as I crawl into bed, With my ears in the drawer, My teeth and a glass, My eyes on the table, Until I wake up. As sleep dims my vision, I say to myself, Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf. But though nations are warring, And business is vexed, I'll still stick around, To see what happens next. |
