Default Problem Foods

Food is our friend, but it can also be an enemy. Allergies, sensitivities, lactose intolerance, coeliac disease, etc are all ways normally beneficial food can harm us. Do you have nemesis foods, and if so what are the ways they affect you?

For me, my enemy is mushrooms. Mushrooms, even the essence of mushrooms, causes a strong allergic response manifesting as anaphylaxis. My airway constricts, making breathing extremely difficult. Scary stuff.

I can't eat mangoes. I love them. I can eat Mango candy, have mango juice, but if my lips touch the fruit, I break out in a rash all over it. And it feels like poison ivy. Mango is in the sumac family, so it's not quite a stretch.

I have allergic reactions to anything that has a liquid purple dye. Think grape Gatorade, grape soda, purple amp...etc. Introduce the slightest bit of liquid purple and my whole face swells like a mutant. I look disfigured. It can last for two or three days. Soooooooo not sexy.

Peppers -anaphylaxis

Grapefruit - in any form, makes my stomach hurt badly, but not technically allergic.

Ice cream - either lactose intolerant or allergic to a milk protein, but this in particular makes me violently ill.

Sunny D - I can't swallow it. My throat or whatever completely rejects it.

Alfredo sauce - same as Sunny D

Cookies n cream flavored ANYTHING - personally revolting and just doesn't taste appealing to me.

Cilantro - I really REALLY want to like this but I lack the enzyme to taste anything but soap when I eat this. Sorry, cilantro, or to much of Europe and Panasia, coriander.

Most likely you are allergic to milk protein. If you can't eat hard cheeses, it's definitely milk protein, because the critters that make cheese digest lactose. The hard cheeses have the most exposure to said critters, so the lactose is almost entirely gone from cheeses like cheddar and farmer.

My stomach hates high fructose corn syrup. I get cramps when eating things with it, so I avoid it like the plague now. I suspect it's the GMO corn. I never had a problem as a kid.

I forgot about peppers. Any pepper, even sweet ones repeat via burps for DAYS after eating them. I LOVE peppers but they're kind of rude for a while with me and they get tiresome..

I also have to be careful with eating a HUGE salad.. it makes me not happy digestively.. i love salad too

As a kid I ate anything but eggs and watermelon, but over time Iíve sadly ended up with a lengthy list of problem foods. I have two issues: allergies to the apple family and what is probably mild IBS with a specific sulphur related trigger.

For the former I have the classic array of issues : allergy to the pollen of birch and apples and related trees, and allergies to the uncooked skins of apples, pears, cherries, and some other related fruits. Basically if it is a fruit that dangles off an apple-like stem, I probably canít have it.

For the latter I have a few specific, strong, triggers, and a more general dosage thing. Dehydrated onion or garlic (which are in all sorts of things) go through me like turpentine through a duck, and eggs (or even things with high concentrations of egg) make me outright nauseous. More generally if I have much of the higher sulphur vegetables (leafy greens, onions, legumes (including soy products), etc) and/or a lot of fat, my digestive system kind of fails to function very well. Iíd actually started to move away from eating much meat at one point, from environmental concerns, but unfortunately most of the non-meat protein sources are rough on my system.

Oh, and watermelon? I can eat it just fine, but I still donít care for the texture.

I have a slight allergy to tomatoes so if I have a sauce or a salsa most likely iI won't be feeling very good sometime after. I also reject a lot of high fatty foods like sausages or gravy.

I am soooooo glad i don't have this! I love cilantro. I even make a salad that has more cilantro than lettuce! It's a hit for those who like cilantro.

I strongly suspect I'm a "supertaster," though I can't prove it.

I dislike almost every single food listed on the wikipedia page as examples (except soy, I don't mind soy products), and I'm very sensitive to the taste of salt. My favorite non-candy snack is unsalted potato chips, though they are very difficult to find. Regular potato chips are way too salty for me to enjoy. I despise green tea, the only tea I like is black tea. Cranberries are also bitter to me, but mixed with another juice in a juice cocktail I can tolerate it. Mixed with pomegranate juice it actually becomes palatable.

For whatever reason, I cannot take raw carrots anymore. Same with hummus. I digest everything else just fine, but those result in horrid stomach cramps for up to 8 hours. :/

Then I must be, like, the very opposite of that, whatever that's called. With the exception of SunnyD, I just would not like to even imagine life without all of the foods mentioned above. The nightshade-related plant foods, tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, and eggplant, give me trouble. It can be as small as incredible thirst to stomach cramps to fever and rash/hives. What makes it especially troublesome: I LOVE TOMATOES!!!

I have a hard time with; rice, pasta, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peppers, boneless skinless chicken breast, steak of any kind, pork loin, Chinese food, pizza that is too doughy, well anything that is too doughy.

I think that's about it.

I'm allergic to mushrooms, so that's a different issue.

Garlic, I do love it so. Tomato sauce is another exception. That may be because I was raised in an Italian family and tomato sauce and garlic are everywhere in Italian American cuisine.

Hot dogs, ugh. The salt is all I can taste.

Sounds like you're allergic to them but at different sensitivities. I'm allergic to all of them as well, (I've been officially diagnosed as allergic to all nightshades) but tomatoes are a very low sensitivity whereas peppers could kill me.
