I dont like this song, but if you listen to the words, to me it sounds stalkerish. I used to hear it at work a lot (we keep the radio to easy listening type music in the office - so not to offend anyone! :)) Especially the part in bold!

    Clay Aiken - Invisible.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8ItnxlpAc8

    Whatcha doin tonight
I wish I could be a fly on your wall
    Are you really alone
    Who's stealin' your dreams
Why can't I bring you into my life
What would it take to make you see that I'm alive

    [Chorus]

    If I was invisible
Then I could just watch you in your room
    If I was invincible
    I'd make you mine tonight
    If hearts were unbreakable
Then I could just tell you where I stand
I would be the smartest man
    If I was invisible
    (Wait..I already am)

Saw your face in the crowd
    I call out your name
    You don't hear a sound
    I keep tracing your steps
    Each move that you make
Wish I could read what goes through your mind
Wish you could touch me with the colors of your life

    [Chorus]

    If I was invisible
Then I could just watch you in your room
    If I was invincible
    I'd make you mine tonight
    If hearts were unbreakable
Then I can just tell you where I stand
I would be the smartest man
    If I was invisible
    (Wait..I already am)

    I reach out
But you don't even see me
    Even when I'm scream out
    Baby, you don't hear me
    I am nothing without you
    Just a shadow passing through...

    [Repeat Chorus]

    If I was invisible...
    If I was invisible...
    If I was invisible...
    If I was invisible...
    If I was invisible...
    If I was invisible...

James Blunt's Beautiful pisses me off. It's just so stupid to me....and a creepfest.
It has always sounded to me like a guy that saw a beautiful woman he does not know, made eye contact, imagines himself in love with her but knows he won't be with her and feels dejected. All this occurs while he is high....need I say more?

    Beautiful with Lyrics:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlG99v4_kXQ

That part where he says "and I don't know what to do".....I can tell him....MOVE THE HELL ON MAN!!!!

How romantic....a drunk/high guy imagining himself in love with a stranger. Gee, never heard of that one before.....

"Interpretation" of James Blunt's Beautiful video by some kid online. He thinks it's a man killing himself over a woman he knows and loves......I beg to differ but even if the song even did go that deep......it's still stupid and creepy.

Captain and Tennille - Muskrat Love

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lbh9c0noR4s

Singing a song about muskrats making love is just plain creepy... I'd rather see two sheep humping...

And yes, I know mention of this song shows my age...

Lol, I tend to think that this one might have been meant to be a little creepy....now this one I really like...even if the tone of it carries a dark threat

    The Toadies- Possum Kingdom
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5Cf5OusjrQ

    "Possum Kingdom"

    Make up your mind
    Decide to walk with me
    Around the lake tonight
    Around the lake tonight
    By my side
    By my side
    I'm not gonna lie
    I'll not be a gentleman
    Behind the boathouse
I'll show you my dark secret

    I'm not gonna lie
    I want you for mine
    My blushing bride
My lover, be my lover, yeah...

    Don't be afraid
I didn't mean to scare you
    So help me, Jesus

    I can promise you
    You'll stay as beautiful
    With dark hair
    And soft skin...forever
    Forever

    Make up your mind
    Make up your mind
    And I'll promise you
    I will treat you well
    My sweet angel
    So help me, Jesus

    (hey, hey, hey)

    Give it up to me
    Give it up to me
    Do you wanna be
    My angel?
    So help me!

    Be my angel
    Be my angel
    Do you wanna die?
    I promise you
    I will treat you well
    My sweet angel
    So help me, Jesus

    Jesus
    Jesus
    Jesus...

It's a song about a jealous man that smothers the person he loves. Sting even said that's what it was about.....but was surprised to find it revered as a "love" song.

I heard an interview of James Blunt once where he said that the song was about an ex-gf - they passed each other on the subway and she was with a new man whom he didn't know. Their eyes met and he felt they exchanged some sort of silent communication in that glance, and the song resulted from how it made him feel.

I grew up listening to this song and have always loved it, but when I really stopped and listened to the lyrics, it really started creeping me out. It's basically a guy taking advantage of a young woman by coercing her into spending the night with him...and the "what's in this drink?" line makes it worse. It kind of makes me sad that I can't enjoy it anymore because I always thought of it as a sweet classic song before.

    Baby It's Cold Outside

    I really can't stay
    (but baby it's cold outside)
    I've got to go 'way
    (but baby it's cold outside)
this evening has been so very nice
(I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)

my mother will start to worry!
    (beautiful, what's your hurry?)
and father will be pacing the floor
    (listen to that fireplace roar)
    so really I'd better scurry!
    (beautiful, please don't hurry)
well maybe just a half a drink more
(puts some records on while I pour)

    the neighbors might think
    (baby it's bad out there)
    say, what's in this drink?
(no cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how to break the spell
(I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)

I oughtta say no, no, no, sir
(mind if I move in closer?)
at least I'm gonna say that I tried!
(what's the sense of hurtin' my pride?)
    I really can't stay
    (baby, don't hold out)
[both] ahh but it's cold outside!!

    I simply must go
    (but, baby it's cold outside)
    the answer is no
    (but BABY it's cold outside)
this welcome has been so nice and warm
(look out the window at that STORM!)
    my sister will be suspicious!
    (gosh your lips look delicious!)
my brother will be there at the door!
    (waves upon a tropical shore!)
my maiden aunt's mind is vicious
    (GOSH, your lips are delicous)
well, maybe just a cigarette more
    (NEVER such a blizzard before)

    I've got to get home!
(but, baby, you'll FREEZE out there!)
    say, lend me your coat?
(it's up to your knees out there)
    you've really been grand!
(I thrill when you touch my hand)
    but don't you see?
(HOW can you DO this thing to ME?)

there's bound to be talk tomorrow
(think of my life long sorrow!)
at least there will be plenty implied!
(if you caught pneumonia and DIED!!)
    I really can't stay!
    (baby, don't hold out)
    (o0o0o0o0o0o)
    [Both]ahhhhhhh baby it's cold outside!!

What's so funny about Frank Loesser's "If I Were A Bell" is that in all of the stage productions I've seen of it - amateur groups, mostly - the song is performed so that the character involved, Sara, looks pathetically drunk and unable to keep her balance. This is a terrible contrast with the film delivery by Jean Simmons, which is courageous and powerful.

For context: the song concerns a young woman who has spent her life being very uptight about love, sex, drink, etc., and before the song she is taken out for a night on the town with a handsome crook named Sky Masterson (most famously played by Marlon Brando in the film, Robert Alda on stage). The way that Simmons moves and sings is uplifting - as if she's learning to be happy for the first time in her entire existence. Additionally, it's a very sexual song (this is why I brought it up), consisting of one coy metaphor after another and culminating in a passionate kiss between Sara & Sky.

The best cover I've heard of it is by Doris Day, where she omits the penultimate line for "If I Were A Season, I Know For Sure I'd Be Spring". This puzzles me, as that line is extremely tame compared to the one immediately before it - especially when combined with the little hand-signal that Simmons uses in her performance...

Ask me how do I feel
Ask me now that we're cozy and clinging
Well sir, all I can say, is if I were a bell I'd be ringing!

From the moment we kissed tonight
That's the way I've just gotta behave
Boy, if I were a lamp I'd light
And If I were a banner I'd wave!

Ask me how do I feel, little me with my quiet upbringing
Well sir, all I can say is if gate I'd be swinging!
And if I were a watch I'd start popping my springs!
Or if I were a bell I'd go ding dong, ding dong ding!

Ask me how do I feel from this chemistry lesson I'm learning.

    SKY (spoken) Uh, chemistry?
    SARAH (spoken) Yes, chemistry!

Well sir, all I can say is if I were a bridge I'd be burning!

Yes, I knew my moral would crack
From the wonderful way that you looked!
Boy, if I were a duck I'd quack!
Or if I were a goose I'd be cooked!

Ask me how do I feel, ask me now that we're fondly caressing
Well, if I were a salad I know I'd be splashing my dressing
Ask me how to describe this whole beautiful thing
Well, if I were a bell I'd go ding dong, ding dong ding!

I liked the version done by Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews - she has a tone of voice that makes her sound teasing rather than frightened.

Run For Your Life by The Beatles. It's so catchy and upbeat...and then you realize what they're saying.

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
    Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end'a little girl

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end'a little girl

    Let this be a sermon
    I mean everything I've said
    Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end'a little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
    Catch you with another man
    That's the end'a little girl
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na
    Na, na, na

This thread really cracks me up. :D

Love songs are weird to begin with. I love what a song like "867-5309" does, for example, in taking the genre's creepiness and putting it upfront. Same thing with The Shins, who make these weird, surreal songs that smack of love, hang onto the pretty, but take all the syrup out of them by filling them with unexpected nonsense.

Maybe some of the creepiest love songs are love songs to drugs and alcohol. You're singing along, thinking how adorable it all is... Until you realize that something ain't quite right.

Various Artists | "I've Got You Under My Skin"

    Lou Reed | "Perfect Day"

so quietly and beautifully hostile! i still can't believe some people think this is actually a beautiful love song. are they even paying attention?

    Just Like a Woman--Bob Dylan

    Just Like A Woman
    Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain
    Ev'rybody knows
    That Baby's got new clothes
But lately I see her ribbons and her bows
    Have fallen from her curls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.

    Queen Mary, she's my friend
Yes, I believe I'll go see her again
    Nobody has to guess
    That Baby can't be blessed
Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest
With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls.
She takes just like a woman, yes, she does
She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does
And she aches just like a woman
But she breaks just like a little girl.

It was raining from the first
And I was dying there of thirst
    So I came in here
    And your long-time curse hurts
    But what's worse
    Is this pain in here
    I can't stay in here
    Ain't it clear that--

    I just can't fit
Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit
    When we meet again
    Introduced as friends
Please don't let on that you knew me when
I was hungry and it was your world.
Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do
You make love just like a woman, yes, you do
Then you ache just like a woman
But you break just like a little girl.

    Kelly Folsom,
How about the Gilbert O Sullivan song Claire? To me it sounds like a beautiful ballad on one hand and if listened to closer it sounds like a pedophilic relationship.

The other song is supposed to be a pretty love ballad that really wierds me out is Rod Stewart, Tonight's the night which describes the coercion of an intrepid virgin girl to have sex.
