I never appreciated the cartoon Animaniacs, where they insulted CW without censure. I was too young! Now I understand, and wish that cartoon were still on the air. :(

I have only heard good things about this movie... I guess I will have to check it out. Is it a good date movie?

Well first off I hate, even despise musicals. I do like Queen Latefa (sp?) but Jhon Travolta in drag is really just too scary.
Maybe I'll wait till it comes out on dvd so I can watch it on mute.

I don't usually like musicals, I do like John Travolta but in action movies..my favorite is "Swordfish". However I DO like beautiful fat women and I LOVE the fact that this movie was size positive. It is a good movie even if you usually don't like musicals! :)

    It lacks music from 1962.

For me, that is: Epic fail.

    Hi

Here is a great photo of Nikki Blonsky taken without her Hairspray makeup and hair. She looks like another Woman!!

I thought the new Hairspray was a big step down from the original in both quality and positive messages.

    (Spoilers)
The only mention of weight from Edna in the original is the passing references to diet pills (which were treated more like uppers to control her mood) and one mention of "girls like Tracy aren't on TV" but in the new film Edna is a shut in(!) who makes regular cracks about her and Tracy's weight. Even though Travolta's Edna is smaller than Divine's Edna, she hasn't left the apartment in 10 years! And to celebrate her getting on the show Tracy has to convince Edna to leave the apartment to go to Pinky's instead of Edna taking Tracy out in the original.

They also made Link a little racist and selfish instead of a fellow integrationist who introduces Tracy and Penny to Motormouth's record store.

Penny's mom was also watered down (I was really hoping her Twilight-Zone-in-the-black-side-of-town scene was going to be a big musical number, instead they just cut it).

All that's left in the film is "racism is bad" and "it's ok to be fat I guess."

There were still some nice moments, the cast was great, I liked every actor in their part (even Travolta was fun in the dance numbers but horrible in the speaking portions). It's just a shame they clipped the claws of the original and filled it with a bunch of bland songs instead of classics from the era (why not go the Blues Brothers/Moulon Rouge route?).

It's the lack of bangs in that picture. Bangs totally change the appearance of the face.

Also someone said that this version was less fat positive, but I don't necessarily think so. In the original Edna was self hating and spewing that on Tracy. That was the reference to diet pills I believe. She wanted Tracy to take them. In this version there was more emphasis on Edna's self hatred, but at least she was not mean to her daughter for it, which I think is the most important part.

Normally I'm a "lights off, door closed, dog out of the room" kind of guy, but if Ms. Blonsky were to ever make it to Michigan I might give up my modesty just to be caught on camera doing things that would require SEVERAL days to recover....:p

I just pray that one glorious day, a feature length of "weapon of choice" will come out... Or an CW interpretive dance of the gold watch scene. That would be disturbingly hilarious.

I really liked Hairspray but I was super disappointed that John Travolta was casted as the fat mother. There are not nearly enough roles for fat women in Hollywood and ALWAYS roles for me - fat or otherwise. I just wish JW would have casted a bio woman. Having said that, I loved the film. I thought it was very fat positive and just made me laugh. I loved the ridiculousness of it.

I used to love the Animaniacs, and especially that delightful theme tune:

"The writer's flipped, we have no script, why bother to rehearse?"

John Travolta isn't exactly the 'Saturday Night Fever' slim dancer anymore.

I saw this movie. Liked it.

I didn't think about how it was a remake or how there could have been more real fat actors.

I just appreciated the fact there was a fairly fat positive film in mainstream media.
