This is really depressing. I posted two photos on facebook today. One of each of my little daughters -- my chubby 8 year old and my skinny 6 year old. The photo of my skinny daughter got 40% more likes. What does it say when even friends and family disfavor the fat kid?

Who are the people liking these photos? Are they family members? How awful! I'm sorry you are experiencing this. :(

Friends and family. Luckily the people who matter most liked both.

I will take your word for it. Some ppl like children closer to babies. Like I said, I am not an
fb type of person. I saw this documentary on Annorexia Nervosa. It was nuts. The woman was literally the billboard-woman against it in France. Was signing books from her story in a book store. Still, she died short time after it.

The problem with kids - especially little girls - is that the skinny ideal for them is even more brutal.

Weight for children is measured according to percentiles for age group - so alone if a child is taller and stronger than average for his/her age, the institutionalized fat bashing starts.
Recent Australian & UC research has shown that children who were told they are fat (even though they weren't or indeed barely chubby) do tend to either really become fat or fatter than those who were never judged.

So it is a self-fulfilling negative spiral.

Odds are high that their peers know it too, and that this plays itself out in various ways socially. Certainly when my son was in school I noticed that even in junior kindergarten the one chubby girl was kind of sidelined from the main social clumps.
