This is not a story I read online, nor something I heard second or third hand. These are people I know, and I've seen the marriage certificate with my own eyes.

Same sex marriage in Alabama! How is this possible?

A. and D. are an officially married lesbian couple. Here is how it's possible: D. is a MtF transgender, and Alabama does not recognize transgendered people. Officially, D. is still a man and therefore Alabama law REQUIRES that A. and D. be allowed to marry.

So my lesbian friends are officially married and the state of Alabama had no legal choice but to allow them to proceed. That's not to say they didn't encounter blatant discrimination, they did. The first judge they went to declared, loudly and in public, that "While I can't stop you from getting married in Alabama, I can stop you from getting married in MY COUNTY!"

Nice guy, but his bigotry didn't stop them. The judge in the next county over held his nose and granted the license.

I just had to share this bit of awesomeness. I was so happy for them when I realized they really were legally married. :)
