Scott Pilgrim, if you don't know, is the story of a 20-something slacker named, well, Scott Pilgrim. He's a dork, a dweeb, and pretty endearing most of the time. In his own head, he is a hero. In his words, he is "such a paragon."
But Scott can also be an ass sometimes, which is something he is totally oblivious to very often. He can miss a great thing when it's right in front of him, because he's wrapped up in his own insecurities, self-doubt, and often projects those negativities onto others. Granted, he's not the worst guy in the world. I mean, the girl of his dreams once called him the nicest guy she ever dated, so that's gotta count for something. He's just a guy with a lot to learn. And he does learn, even if it's through the hard way. But I mean, that's life, isn't it? Sometimes you have to soak in bad things, in order for the good things to mean anything.

If I may borrow a quote from an unrelated film, "You can do whatever you want with your life, but one day you'll know what love truly is. It's the sour and the sweet. And I know sour, which allows me to appreciate the sweet."

After a series of dick moves and questionable life choices, Scott eventually realizes, by facing himself, what really matters. What's really important.
So he uses a 1-up.
And he fights for it.
And he wins.
And despite everything, things might not be perfect in the end, but things are okay. And at the end of it all, there's a door. It's never perfectly clear what's behind it - it could be beautiful, it could be terrifying. But it's a second chance. And it's definitely worth trying again.

If there's hope for a 20-something, loser, fuck-up, dweeb like Scott Pilgrim, maybe, just maybe, there's hope for anyone.
