In the cold light of day, my joy at the events of last night is muted. I watched the public celebrations with happiness at first, but then experienced a growing sense of uneasiness. While not the same as the celebrations in the Middle East over the 2001 terrorist attacks on the WTC and Pentagon, the similarity was disquieting.

I'm not sorry Osama bin Laden is dead, don't mistake me. I'm very proud of our military and intelligence services. But at the same time, the public celebrations now strike me as... unseemly. And let us not forget, Osama bin Laden has been relegated to the status of an icon, out of touch with the day to day operations of al Qaeda for years. His death is a milestone, but it is not the end of al Qaeda. Not by a long shot.
