Looking for a sci-fi story

I really can't remember much except this group on a spaceship are exposed to this liquid like substance that causes them to have a fever and they lose a bunch of weight in one night and then their appetite becomes insatiable and they have to keep eating.

The story connects their illness with the behavior of some creature they discovered on one of the planets.

If anyone knows what this is, I would love to read it again.
