Over the last couple of years I have noticed an alarming trend in films that I don’t like. The absence of normal and even fuller figured females. Now I don’t mean art films that often have realistic looking characters but the more popular mainstream films that usually are successful at the box office. Sharing a few examples, the terrible biker film, Hell Ride and Death Proof both featured female characters who looked as if they spent all their free time at the gym. Same thing with the horror film, Hostile. The new Star Trek film isn’t excluded or the recent comedy Couples Retreat. You’d think at least one female character would look comparably normal too the average female. The other day I went to see the film Valentine’s Day that included a cast made up of a variety of leading actresses. The characters they portrayed all resembled movie stars and not authentic looking females. There’s a scene where Jennifer Garner’s character is talking too another character that just happens to be chubby. The camera shot is a side view of the chubby gal and the film is out of focus, implying that because the actress isn’t slim, she’s not captivating enough too warrant conventional screen time. Granted Queen Latifah is in the film but her role is minimal and is a supporting character. In the before mentioned Couples Retreat, every female at the resort is in perfect shape. In real life, very few of the females would possess such athletic figures. I only wish that realistic looking females would be better represented in film and this includes plus size females as well.
