AMBER AND CAROLYN - Chap 8
A tale of two sisters and their friends

CHAPTER 8 – THE INDUSTRIOUS TEENS

Carolyn was not lazy, but she wasn’t a compulsive early riser like her sister. Amber was usually awake by six if she’d made it to bed by midnight. This Saturday morning it was nearly eight when Carolyn, sated from her hearty pasta bedtime feast, got out of bed.

Realizing she had a commitment at noon and that both Amber and her parents were likely already gone she got her laundry started, then began thinking about breakfast. She found half an avocado and a quarter cantaloupe in the refrigerator plus two surplus pancakes in the freezer section.

“OK, with a couple of eggs and some cheese the avocado makes a good omelet,” she thought.

There were two egg cartons in the fridge – one was full, the other had only three left.

“Ok, a three egg omelet,” she decided. “Leaving just one egg in a container is a silly waste of refrigerator room.” She started warming a skillet on the stove, put the pancakes on a covered plate in the microwave, and set out the cantaloupe.

The phone rang and she acknowledged to her friend Jeanne that she should be on time to help Jeanne’s Dad do inventory. It was one of several odd job network means that Carolyn used to supplement her allowance.

By now the pan was ready for the eggs, cheese and avocado. She quickly combined the ingredients and soon had a three egg omelet. The washer dinged and she turned off the flame, starting the microwave as she went to the laundry alcove. In less than three minutes she’d moved the first load from washer to dryer and gotten the second washer load started.

“That’s efficiency,” she thought with pride as she ladled out the eggs onto a plate and put them with the now hot pancakes on the table. As she plucked the syrup from the cabinet the family’s cocker spaniel turned up begging, but she knew that he had plenty of dry food.

“No, Charlie," she said. ”You have your own, this is for me.”

She ate her breakfast slowly, thinking about the day ahead. After inventory she could come back and get some homework done before supper. Bowling would be in the evening. She was happy for the extra ten dollars she’d make today, but she wanted something that would double or triple that number. She had tried to follow her mom’s advice and save half of whatever she made, but it would be a lot easier if she could actually make some real dollars!

In truth, Carolyn was already exceptional. In three years she’d managed to put over $800 in a savings account, mostly this past year from Monday evening babysitting for one regular customer. It wasn’t much but more than any other teenager her age that she knew. It was just less than Amber had done at the same age and Carolyn knew it.

Her reverie was broken by the ding of the washer. The dryer was still running.

“Oh well, let’s get the dishes over with” she thought and slapped them into the washer. It had other dishes as well and was nearly full, but she knew not to turn it on. The laundry was on the same circuit and had been known to blow a fuse with all three machines running.

She put the empty egg carton and other trash into the compactor, then went back to the refrigerator and got one of the pina colada yogurts that were normally for school lunches. When early-bird Amber had started cooking breakfasts to enable their mom to go back to work five years before late sleeper Carolyn had volunteered for KP duty to get an allowance rais. Keeping the kitchen neat, along with snacking at times while doing it, was now an ingrained habit.

Shortly before 11:00 both loads of laundry were done, folded and put away. Carolyn rewarded herself with two large oatmeal and raisin cookies, then set out on foot for the store where she knew Jeanne would be waiting.

Inventory isn’t a difficult task,. You either count or you hold the clip board and take notes, but it has to be done periodically in retail stores for taxes and to detect shrinkage (a fancy word for stealing). It also monitors slow-moving items and helps detect developing shortages. This shop, dealing with fabric and yardage, chose to do it quarterly.

It took the two girls, Jeanne’s Dad and her brother just over two hours, Mr. Johnson paid the teens their money, then gave Jenny a twenty and told his daughter to treat her brother and Carolyn to lunch.

”Where shall we go on $20,” Jenny sked.

“Taco Bell – across the street and cheap,” her brother replied.

Carolyn joined in, being careful to monitor her intake so as not to be the biggest eater. She only had a burrito combo and a .99 taco, but while her friends were full at the end she typically wished she had more. She headed for home, still on foot, to get her homework done. When she got there no one was home and she was really craving something to go with the Mexican fast food lunch. Hot from the second mile-long walk of the day she prepared a large bowl of ice cream and buckled down to her studies.

As 6:00 approached she finished. Knowing her Mom had been home for an hour she went down to the kitchen from her second floor bedroom to see if she needed help with supper. Her Mom, a midsize woman and as efficient a cook as her daughters, was already well into the food prep. She assigned Carolyn to whip the potatoes that had been boiling on the stove. She was herself handling the casserole dish filled with chicken legs.

“I hope your Father makes it,” she remarked. “He said 6:00 would be fine, but who knows. I don’t think Amber will be back in time – she’s been on that fundraiser all day.”

“You’re right – but she had a good night last night. I wonder if she’s in love with this Dave guy?”

“Who can say – but your Father and I would like to meet him and not just hear about him.”

“Maybe we should invite him to dinner?” Carolyn said, silently thinking “then we would be sure to have dessert.”

Her Mom, watching her own calories seldom prepared desserts; once a week she let her husband treat the family.

“Not a bad idea,” her Mom replied.

At that point Mr. Roger’s car pulled in and Carolyn exclaimed. “OK, serving time! Let’s roll.”

Her Mom observed casually but without major concern just how tightly Carolyn’s belly and butt were cramming her jeans.

"Someone needs bigger clothes," she noted. The family enjoyed supper, with Carolyn having green pleas, three piece of chicken and a healthy serving of mashed potatoes.

“Whew,” she realized, as she went to her room, “I’m going to have to wear my Capri’s to bowling tonight – these jeans are too tight!

Amber showed up shortly after 7:30, just in time to take Carolyn and herself to Saturday bowling with their church group. Her older sister's abandoned capris were indeed comfortable, but if anyone looked carefully they could see that they hid nothing of what was happening to her figure. She had a round and full belly balanced by thickening thighs and an ample rear. Fortunately none of the eight young people involved cared.

This time, unlike the previous weekend, both Amber and Carolyn were able to enjoy their after game refreshments and friends without interruption. As usual both girls ate well, with the taller Carolyn having two more pizza slices than Amber, who had four.

Carolyn dutifully tucked $5 into the porcelain pig on her vanity as she prepared for bed. It had been a good – and filling – day. Unknown to her, Jeanne had already successfully lobbied her dad to include her as an employee the next month.

Amber was thinking about her Church commitments and wondering how Dave would react to them. Their parents were wondering about Dave as well. As for Dave, in a hotel room 1200 miles away, he was still thinking about the night before and missing his dinner partner with the ample appetite.
