The earlier, other controversial Arizona immigration law permitting the state government to penalize employers for employing illegal immigrants was upheld by the Supreme Court last year if you'll recall.
The way I read it is that a cop can ask for someones immigration status and if the person is illegal the cop can then report them to federal authorities. I would think the fact of someone's illegal status would mean there's a high likelihood of there being an employer in violation of the law also.
