Daily chair activism -- finding a comfortable chair.

The spring preview edition of Woman Within has what they call a Plus Size Living section. Among other things the section offers folding cots that go up to 600 pounds, a 500 pound capacity folding chair, furniture that goes up to 500 pounds, 1200 pound capacity toilet seats, a talking scale that goes up to 440 pounds, and a remote read-out scale that goes up to 1000 pounds.

Of particular interest to me is page F2 – 16 which has items of mostly office furniture. The three chairs on the page all have 500 pound capacities. The executive office chair has 27 inches between the arms and the two desk chairs have seats that are 29 inches wide. These three chairs are all on rollers.

If a chair has a 500 pound capacity that does not mean that it will break at 501 pounds. Its breaking point will be considerably higher than 500 pounds.

If you have hips that are 80 inches in circumference that does not automatically mean that your hips will not touch the sides when you are sitting in a desk chair that has 29 inches between the arms. Still, depending on where the fat in a person’s hip area is located, a person with an 85 or 90 inch hip circumference should be able to fit comfortably in the chair with 29 inches between the arms. For instance, my hips are 62 inches in circumference and my office chair is 19 inches between the arms. My hips brush up against both sides of the chair but not to the extent that it is uncomfortable.

For those who have hips that are greater in circumference than 85 or 90 inches or who do not wish to sit in a chair that has arms, on this page there is a 500 pound capacity office chair with a 29 inch wide seat and no arms. I do not know but I suspect that a person with hips that are up to 100 inches, in circumference, can, with some comfort, sit on this chair.

If you have a boss who is enlightened enough to realize that a comfortable worker is likely to be more productive than a miserably uncomfortable worker than the boss may pick up the cost of purchasing the chair for your workstation.
