Dear Editor:

On Saturday, February 27 an article by David Limbaugh talked about people being, “…endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights.” Mr. Limbaugh goes on to say, “It doesn’t say we’re endowed by Washington DC or endowed by the bureaucrats or endowed by state government. It’s by our Creator that we are given these rights.” (Page A4) On Wednesday, March 3 Rhonda Corbett also quotes the Declaration of Independence “… that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain, unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” Rhonda Corbett then states that, “God is the source of our human rights.” (Page A4)

If one follows these arguments through, one reaches some interesting conclusions. While the creator is credited with having endowed mankind with certain unalienable rights; for four score and seven years after the writing of the Declaration of Independence the creator was unwilling or unable to give liberty to the African-American slaves in the United States. If the creator was omnipotent she could easily have had all slaveowners in the United States wake up one morning and decide that slavery was denying their slaves of their inalienable right to liberty and, by the end of the day, all of the slaves in the United States would have been free. However the creator could not or would not give liberty to the slaves. In the absence of action by the creator, and, starting in 1863, it was the bureaucrats in Washington DC who, in a very expensive and bloody manner, managed to actually give to slaves one of the rights that the creator had theoretically endowed upon them. .

There is another inalienable right given by the Creator and that is the right to the pursuit of happiness. Certainly part of the pursuit of happiness involves being evaluated based on your personality, education, and abilities. The pursuit of happiness is limited if a person’s choices are limited because of their skin color. For 100 years after the bureaucrats in Washington had given all black people liberty, the creator, who had theoretically given all people the right to pursue happiness, was unable or unwilling to end segregation. Because of their skin color, in many states the state governments were unwilling to give African-Americans the right to equal pursuit of happiness. It took the bureaucrats of Washington DC to finally give African-Americans their Creator given right to the pursuit of happiness.

Now we are involved in the great struggle over the Creator given right to life. The Creator is unwilling or unable to keep all people healthy all the time. The bureaucrats in Washington DC are trying to find a way to keep as many people healthy for as long as possible and thus we have the great healthcare debate. It was the bureaucrats in the central government of Washington DC that actually gave African-Americans their inalienable right to liberty and it was the bureaucrats in the central government of Washington DC that actually gave African-Americans their right to pursue happiness regardless of their skin color and now it will be the bureaucrats in Washington DC who try to keep all people as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Rhonda Corbett correctly says, “God is the source of our human rights” but, as pointed out above, it is the bureaucrats in Washington DC who are actually trying to make sure that all Americans have those rights.
