Banned from facebook,
Several comments have been made lately about genetically engineered seeds and companies like Monsanto forcing their way into third world countries. It took a wee bit of time, but tried to catalogue the record of Monsanto and let DIMS readers be the judge of what's happening to some of our food supply.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monsanto makes Polystyrene – basic plastic ingredient (bottoms of shoes, steering wheels, cases of cell phones, cases of computers, car parts, rug fibers, fishing line, paints, furniture, clothing, tires, stuff we need in daily life

Monsanto also makes a herbicide – Glyphosphate – Roundup

They pioneered and developed LED lights – light emitting diodes

They produced DDT – a pesticide (killed mosquitos with malaria, saved millions of people) Currently, malaria worldwide kills up to 2000 people a day. 65% of the cases are in children under the age of 15.
In 2010, there were 216 million cases of malaria worldwide resulting in 650,000 deaths – mostly children.
In my personal opinion, this is the crowning achievement of the Monsantos work - reducing malaria deaths.

However, DDT was an environmental poison and caused birds to lay eggs that would not hatch. DDT has been banned for years because of this problem.

Monsanto also developed Saccharin and then Nutrasweet.
And it makes L- dopa – to treat Parkinson’s disease

This one is a different story, Monsanto is responsible for Agent Orange – a pesticide used in Vietnam

But then, it developed Bayer aspirin
and Acetic acid – AKA vinegar

and Astro Turf.

Monsanto helped encourage the American Society of Safety Engineers – ASSE.
Monsanto Bought the Searle Co (makes medicines including Celebrex)

Monsanto first to genetically modify a plant cell. It is involved with nvolved with DeKalb, Eli Lilly, Cargill, Pfizer, BASF in genetics of seeds.

Monsanto helped with the Manhattan project for the Atomic Energy Commission.

Monsanto’s Board of Directors include persons from the following companies: South Dakota State University, Cisco Corp., Sara Lee Corp., McDonalds USA., and the Proctor & Gamble Co. (to name a few).

Monsanto has developed crops that do not need as much pesticide due to their genetic “tweaking”. These crops include maize, cotton, soybeans, sugar beets, and canola. The company is also developing plants that are resistant to insect damage by inserting genes of Bt (a bacillus protein) that kills pests damaging soybean, cotton, and maize crops.

Problems still being controlled – polychlorinated biphenols (PCBs)
PCBs (manufactured by Monsanto) are toxic to people (cause cancer) and the environment. When equipment or liquids are put into landfills, care must be taken that the PCBs have been removed or controlled. (Most commonly, PCBS were in the liquids of electrical parts of fluorescent lamp used in schools & offices.)

Agent Orange – this was a herbicide used to defoliate fields (make crops drop their leaves). It was readily used in Vietnam to kill brush in the jungle to help our troops see the enemy. Unfortunately, agent orange was and is toxic when sprayed on the fields and also toxic to the men spraying the application. It can likely make a spray site or manufacturing site a hazardous waste dump which the EPA is currently requiring cleanup on American soil.

2,4,5,T is a Dioxin contaminant of some of Monsanto’s industrial processes. It is a non-wanted by-product of making another chemical (like agent orange). However, 2,4,5,T is toxic and a cancer causing agent & any plant or soil that is contaminated with this by-product is also a hazardous waste site via EPA.

Monsanto is fitting their genetically manufactured seeds with a “terminator gene”. This means that the seed will grow, and produce a plant & food, but then it will die. The genetically altered seed cannot be used to create a second crop the next year.

Important people with ties to Monsanto
1. Clarence Thomas was once a Monsanto lawyer
2. Michael Taylor who was cleared to work at the FDA, previously worked at Monsanto and went back to Monsanto again upon leaving the FDA.
3. Linda Fischer who worked for 5 years at the EPA, came from Monsanto.
4. Ruckelshaus who worked for the FBI, as a Deputy Attorney General and for the EPA, served on the Monsanto board after leaving the government.
5. Donald Rumsfeld was Chairman of Searle which was purchased by Monsanto.

Disclosure - in the above list, I was member of the Arkansas Chapter of the ASSE and still attend their classes. I have worked at plants in Arkanas that made Agent Orange and contained 2,4,5,T. I have worked in several rice plants in Arkansas that use modified seeds and pesticides. I have worked at plants in Arkansas that make products out of polystyrene beads. M2M
