Consistently smarmy
I was fortunate enough to travel to Tanzania and Zanzibar for work. It was a job that was grueling, frustrating, painful, sometimes luxurious and ultimately rewarding. I wanted to share the experience. I hope you enjoy the images that I brought back.
(Yes, I could have posted a link, but then I couldn't add the running commentary!)
We came upon two lions that were catching their breath after taking down a wildebeest.
We left the savanna and arrived at a watering hole that was filled with hippopotamus. There must have been 100 hippos in the water. (And it smelled like it too!) One of the lodges we stayed at was next to another hippo watering hole. We were required to have an escort (some of them armed with AK-47's) when walking at nite to protect us from all manner of wildlife that roamed the grounds. I had a hippo that kept from sleeping much with its grunting. It made a bed 20 feet from my bungalow.
After watching our last sunrise over the Serengeti, we hopped in a twin prop plane and headed to the town of Moshi and back to Kilimanjaro. During the flight, we passed over Ol Doinyo Lengai (Mountain of God) erupting.
Children playing at a pool below a waterfall
A child in a sunflower field
Zanzibar, while technically a part of Africa, is very different from the mainland. It is very lush and tropical and of course surround by the Indian ocean. Freddie Mercury (Farouk Bulsara) was born into the Parsi community of Stone Town and later reached fame as the lead singer of the rock group Queen.
House of Wonders as seen from the ocean. The House of Wonders, the most imposing structure on the sea front, was built in the 1880s as a ceremonial palace.
Inhabitants of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Zanzibar City was the main trading port of the East African slave trade, with about 50 000 slaves a year passing through the city
Getting to take a trip to Africa was something that will be with me forever. And like all great journey's, I will end this one with a shot of the sunset.
