Melting in the desert
Having been part of the medical field off and on for some years, I've seen a wide variety of traumas, surgeries, and your basic sniffles. What I haven't seen consistently throughout the years are great patient advocates.
You are your best patient advocate...become educated on your illness, disease, surgery, x-rays, and even labwork. The more you know the better your chances are to understand and even prevent further illnesses and or/hospital mistakes.
If you have to be hospitalized for any reason, make sure someone you are close to knows exactly what is going on and is willing to ask questions concerning your health. Don't be afraid to ask about medications you're being given and how they will effect you. Ask about your labwork and what each one is for. Don't be intimidated by your healthcare provider if they scowl at your questions. Remember, you are paying for their service and your health may depend on the answers you get.
Become the educated medical consumer, it could save your life one day!!!
