I was thinking about movies and how as I have gotten older my so often gleefully expressed, morbid curiosity has waned. I used to be so excited about gore scenes in movies and loved being scared or 'grossed out'. Now, I can't bear it. It's all either CGI or unnecessary violence. I am more disturbed by moments in film where you are really left thinking, 'oh dear that really could actually happen'. Seriously just watching 6 Feet Under gives me palpitations and don't get me started on the Final Destination films.

Looking through trailers just now I was reminded about the scene in Ghost-Ship. It's a pretty rubbish film, but that scene, with everyone dancing and then the horrible thing with the wires happens, seriously, that stayed with me for days.

What scenes in movies have really stayed with you by tapping into your own awareness of mortality and given you nightmares?
