I am from Yorkshire, England. To us dinner is the midday meal and Tea is the evening meal (about 6pm) - Supper is a snack before bed. When I worked in London some (non Yorkshire people) would mention they had friends around for Supper - I thought that was a bit odd, inviting friends around for a bite to eat as you head for bed.

It has been said that the US and the UK are two countries divided by a common language. I can tell you that The North of England and the South are equally divided and confused by language.

Don't even get me started on the confusion caused by ordering sandwiches in the UK (particularly the North) - stray 10 miles from your bolt hole and the bread you ask for won't be the bread you receive.
