When I was in college I spent one summer in Europe. I really didn't know what I was doing but one day in Amsterdam I was in a jewelry store and I saw a small gold heart pendant, no bigger than the size of a dime. I thought she might like it so I bought it for her. When I got back home in the states I took it to a local jeweler and had her name engraved on one side and my name engraved on the other. Then I bought a gold chain for it, wrapped it in a box and gave it to her. I had just turned 20, still a kid. We had only been dating three months.

All these years later, after children and grandchildren, ups and downs, joys and sorrows, sickness and health, she still wears it around her neck. That gold chain finally wore out and I bought her a new one on her 50th birthday. I know later tonight when I'm next to her in bed watching her sleep I'll be able to see that gold pendant move slightly on her chest as she breathes.

She has told me many times how much it means to her. And she has no idea how happy that makes me.
