Hi Guys,
I have a question for all you college students/recent college grads out there. How is your willingness to put effort into a class related to your perception of the professor?
The reason I ask is I'm currently teaching an art history survey course at a local university. I've taught smaller classes and have had great experiences. This survey course, however, is a 100-person lecture so I have little to no personal interaction with the students. It strikes me that a large number (certainly not all) of the students are very unwilling to put effort into the class. I won't lie, my class is probably challenging, but I have structured the grading system so that non-majors have a fair shake at a good grade as well.
I guess I'm just wondering about this since there's a older, male, tenured professor who teaches art history 101, and his class is notoriously difficult, yet the students who take the class are willing to work for him. I wonder if being a young, female, non-permanent professor has anything to do with my situation, or if there's something else in my presence/demeanor that might be putting them off. Any thoughts?
