I'm so frustrated and mad right now. Why is it that some people who profess to love you notice and comment on even the smallest change in weight but don't seem to notice much more substantial events.

This evening my mother-in-law saw fit to inform my wife, Jeannette, that "her face is getting fat again." Somehow this cruel comment is rationalized as helpful. Over the last two years Jeannette lost about 90 pounds -- the result of some increased activity and trying to avoid junk food (but not dieting). As her weight decreased her relationship with her mom improved -- we thought her mom was finally coming around (silly us). Now over the last two or three months Jeannette's weight has inched back up 10 or 15 pounds and mom is back to her old ways.

Interestingly the facts that Jeannette had a 4.0 GPA last semester, is up for a promotion at work, and is planning on going to law school next year haven't elicited any comments. Guess this stuff isn't as important as 10 pounds.
