26 and 3X. I'm beginning to hate those numbers...

My wife went clothes shopping this week -- the first time she'd done that in a while. We live in a primarily rural area so most of our shopping is done on line or out of catalogues. After ordering, trying on, sending back, ordering again, etc., she finally got clothes that fit her. Very nice clothes, in fact. They fit her beautifully. She looks terrific in them.

But for the first time in her life she's wearing size 26 and 3X. And it's put her in a major funk. I told her that the clothing size is just a number, reminded her that different stores size the same clothing differently, pointed out that I have shirts in my closet that all fit me and they're sized M to XL, told her how attractive she looks in her new clothes. Didn't seem to help much. She kept coming back to those size numbers, 26 and 3X.

She noted that just a few years ago she was a size 18 and was wearing 1X. 26 is the upper limit of the plus sizes in the catalogue she likes -- so what happens next? What happens if there comes a time when she can't get into a 26? Then what does she do? What if she needs a 28 and 4X? Then she started in about how much she doesn't like her stomach, how she looks like a bowling ball. Etc. Etc. Etc. As I've noted before I'm crazy about my wife's appearance and I tell her that on a daily basis. And I should point out that this isn't self-loathing she's going through. Nothing like that at all. Just major, MAJOR frustration. She felt a little better this morning when she wore some of her new clothes to work, but she was still muttering about being a 26.

We've been together a long time and it still amazes me that she can get so worked up, or so beaten down, by the size number on a tag sewn into an article of clothing. I hate seeing her do that to herself. I know she'll be okay soon; she'll come out of this quickly. But for the moment I'd have to say that 26 and 3X are not my favorite numbers.
