Yesterday a family friend was involved in a very severe accident. Luckily it happened in a jurisdiction that hasn't drank the small government Cool Aid.

Our friend lost control of her SUV on a remote secondary highway in the mountains of north Ventura County. Her SUV rolled multiple times down a steep embankment coming to rest upside down. Fortunately, because the citizens of Ventura County pay for a first class fire department staffed 24/7 with professionals firefighters and pay for fire stations all across the county (even in remote areas), firefighters and paramedics where on the scene within minutes. Our friend was transported to a nearby community hospital where a medivac helicopter was waiting to transfer her to the regional trauma center at Ventura Community Medical Center.

Publicly funded and publicly coordinated services saved our friends life yesterday (two little kids still have their grandmother).

When people talk about getting rid of big government they need to realize the consequences. Ventura County could easily have decided that fire station in the mountains and its well paid and well trained firefighters were just big government pork. Luckily they didn't.
