Hi Everyone,

Whilst on another site recently, I came across a short video called ‘The Fat Body (In)Visible’, by Margitte Kristjansson (http://vimeo.com/17785299). I note that this video has also been flagged by Jes in the Fat Activism Opportunities thread but thought I would bring it into the main.

The video looks at a few issues, particularly surrounding how being a fat woman can create both invisibility within the community, AND hyper-visibility, and how dealing with both these reactions can be difficult at times. A few examples have been made in the film. What have your experiences been??

Another thing which is discussed in the video is ‘fat flying’, which I know has been a hot topic on Dims. The thought of having to purchase additional seats to accommodation your size can be a very confronting and upsetting experience. For instance, feeling that whilst you generally like and are accepting of your size, you also have moments where it can seem almost necessary to lose weight purely from a practical stand-point.

I know from my own experiences, that being accepting of your size on one hand can sometimes create some disharmony within practical society on other levels. Coming to terms with the disparity between those thoughts is challenging. At least it has (and is) for me!

I’m keen to hear whether others have experienced similar feelings of disharmony between conflicting emotions/thoughts relating to your size. How did you deal with these thoughts? Did you have to alter the way you thought about the given situation; or simply accept the conflicting feelings at face-value and move on?

Also, if you have any other short videos on Fat Acceptance please share!!

Filly :)
