I pass several homeless encampments on the way to work everyday. This morning however I noticed a particularly disturbing couple. An old man was pushing a shopping cart full of belongings while his equally old wife clutched his shoulder trying to steady herself. The man stopped to let his wife rest and gently caressed her gray hair.
And this is but one couple. The tent cities rising like mushrooms from the Central Valley's soils grow daily. No country that lets such misery continue can call itself great -- the fact that we are a rich country makes this state of affairs all the more unconscionable.
When I hear right-wing pundits praddle on about how great America is I get queasy. We're not acting like a great country we're acting like a spoiled child who only cares about himself.
