Mardi Gras
By Jade Uncle Tohru

(Author’s Note: Let it be known to all who read this that this story takes place in 1995, long before Hurricane Katrina.)

Katy was born the day before Lent, Mardi Gras. From that day onward she was thin as a stick. Not only that, but she also had an incredibly beautiful face. She was most boys' dream, and by age nine they were already saving up for a ring.

Katy, however, loved to eat. She loved all aspects of it, the smell, the taste, the texture in her mouth, and especially that warm, fuzzy, full feeling she got after every meal. She had a legendary metabolism, though, and never gained weight unless she was growing, and even that was not very often. When she stopped growing she was only 5'1''.

Katy stayed thin until she hit high school. Her freshman year her metabolism slowed a bit. She didn't change her eating habits at all, but the metabolism hadn't slowed enough to make significant weight gain. Just enough so that she filled out in just the right places, and was especially sought after.

When she went to college she had of course heard of the dreaded “Freshman 15” but assumed that it was just natural and did nothing to fight it. So, about the time her birthday came around she had gained seven pounds. Before I go any further, I'd like to point out that Mardi Gras is French. It means “Fat Tuesday.” Katy did know this, but it was about to take on a whole new meaning for her.

Katy began to think, and it occurred to her that for her birthday she and her two best friends ought to go down to New Orleans for the big Mardi Gras celebration. When she proposed the idea to them they immediately agreed, and decided to go down a few days early so they could sightsee before coming back up.

However, there was one setback, Katy was deathly afraid of airplanes, and, living in Washington, driving was not an option. Finally, the three of them came up with a solution: they would take a large amount of food on to the plane, and Katy could eat it all the way down so that her mind wouldn't have time to dwell on the fact that they were several thousand feet in the air. So, on the way down Katy ate all sorts of food, and gained a pound or so.

When they all got down there it was six o'clock in New Orleans, and the girls, except Katy, were famished. Unfortunately, they hadn't been to their hotel yet and didn't know where to eat. They eventually decided they'd just grab some fast food. Before they came on the trip they had all agreed not to watch what they ate at all, so they all had several burgers, a huge thing of fries and a soda the size of my head. For those of you who don't know, that's pretty big.

Finally, after they got done eating, they made it to their hotel, and immediately fell asleep on their beds from a mixture of jet lag, exhaustion, and a nice full stomach. When they woke up they went down and plowed through quite a bit of the free Continental Breakfast. Then they left to go sightseeing. They ate the whole day, and it was a rare thing to see them without something to eat in their hands. By the time Mardi Gras came about they had eaten everything they could, from Gumbo to Boiled Crawfish.

On Mardi Gras though, their stomachs were really put to the test. They didn't just snack the whole day like they had the others. On Mardi Gras they were eating full entrees the whole day. When they got back to the hotel they had a huge collection of beads, and even bigger bellies.

The next morning, after they had sent the men in their beds out of the room, the girls decided to take a look at themselves and estimate how much weight they would need to lose. Katy, everyone guessed, had by far the most to lose. When she had arrived in New Orleans she had barely had a roll of fat on her hips, but now she had four, the hint of a double chin that really came out when she looked down, and a jiggly bottom that seemed more like jell-o than any belly of Santa's. She wasn't nearly as surprised to find out that she had gained 20 pounds as one might have guessed.

The girls all headed back to Washington, and while the other two began to lose weight immediately, Katy noticed all the cute guys who were looking at her in a special way now. Before long she had a gorgeous boyfriend from Puerto Rico, who thought she was pretty, but thought she could do with a bit more pudge on her body.

She was happy to comply.
