One morning over the past weekend, I walked into my favorite general store to grab some breakfast. On the counter by the register, there was a notice that said the age for buying tobacco products in that particular town was being raised to 21 in February. This doesn't affect me at all since Im well over 21 and I dont smoke cigarettes anyway, but this does not really sit well with me. I found out that its happening in towns and cities all over Massachusetts.
If, at the age of 18, one is legally considered an adult, can be tried in adult court, can legally join the military to fight (and possibly die) for this country, can legally buy pornography, can legally work 40+ hrs a week, and can vote in life-changing elections, then why are we not allowing adults to make their own decisions when it comes to tobacco? I also believe the drinking age should be lowered to 18, but I dont see that ever happening.
When does the safety net become an infringement on personal freedom?
