I wanted to start building our deck today, but we had a lot of rain last night and the ground was too wet this morning. Plus I didn't want to risk getting electrocuted using my power tools out there. So I did a project inside the house instead.

A few months ago, I converted the closet in our dining room into a pantry by adding two more shelves (made from pine 1 x 6s) and removing the old sliding doors. But the shelves weren't quite deep enough, they sagged a bit under the weight of canned goods, and Della our cat kept trying to help herself to the cat food (AND the dog food). Plus Beau (our new puppy) tried to help himself to a snack every time he came into the house.

So I bought three more 1 x 6s to make the three bottom shelves 18 inches deep. And installed a 1 x 2 along the back wall below each shelf to stiffen it, and screwed two 1 x 2s to the bottoms of the shelved to make them more rigid. Once I finished work on the shelves, I installed two folding doors with magnetic catches to keep Della and Beau out of the pet food.

Here's what our pantry looks like with the doors closed:

And with the doors open. The top two shelves were part of the original closet - the three bottom shelves are the ones I added. Note the 1 x 2 supports under each of the new shelves:
