Bob Hoskins, the actor best known for his roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Long Good Friday, and Mona Lisa, died on Tuesday after suffering from pneumonia. He was 71.

Hoskins, who also starred in Brazil, Hook, Super Mario Bros., and Nixon, retired from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In 1987, he received a Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in Mona Lisa. His last film role was in 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman.

He died Tuesday in a hospital, surrounded by his family. His wife Linda and four children—Alex, Sarah, Rosa, and Jack—released a statement after his death.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob," the statement said. "Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia. We ask that you respect our privacy during this time and thank you for your messages of love and support."
