His Kitten
by SlightlyMorbid

Part One

Upon realizing that he’d been staring at his computer screen, lost in his thoughts again, he sighed with frustration. He ran his chubby hand through his dark hair and made to remove his glasses when he jumped up as he only now noticed that Evelyn stood in the doorway.

She was a young woman in her mid-twenties but dressed so formally that she looked as if she was forty. Always in the tight business suits with her red hair tight back in a bun which was a hard contrast to her warm, round face and bright blue eyes.

She held a list in her hand and he cocked his brow at her. “Welcome back to reality Renier.” She said, leaning against the doorpost and twirling the pen with that amused look in her eyes. It annoyed him and she noticed, getting to the point. “I’ve got a list here for the annual barbeque. You want to come?” she asked.

He sighed and cleaned his glasses with a cloth. “Who’s coming then?” The annual barbeque. Every year, their company (that specialized in everything construction related) would host a party for all the important customers as a way of thanks and Renier hated it. Being a sales manager, he didn’t really mind having to mingle even though it was dreadfully boring most of the time, but it was the way people always looked annoyed or disgusted with him as he tried to walk past or when he was eating.

Renier was a big man, about 6’2 ft tall and though he hadn’t stepped on the scales in quite some time, he guessed he was at least 550lbs so his presence was hard to miss. He didn’t necessarily feel bothered by his weight, it was the way people looked at him and treated him except for one, who he couldn’t get out of his head.

May had begun working at the company about a year ago to replace Hannah as she had retired in the administration and reception department. Derrick, the boss, had given her a tour through the company during her interview and when she walked into his office, he was briefly at a loss for words.

She was about 5’5 ft tall and rather petite with an hourglass figure. Black curls framed her beautiful, heart-shaped face and her skin was pale, making her gray eyes stand out as they were so warm. When she shook his hand, he felt clumsy as his hand was so big and hers was small and her skin so soft. Her voice was clear but gentle and sweet. “I’m May.”

“Just call me Ren.” He’d said.

From that day on, he’d not been able to keep his eyes off her. Not that anyone really could, she was gorgeous. He fell in love but told himself to keep real, she was off limits, she’d never see something in him and he cherished the moments when they would talk about anything, work-related or not and he loved to make her smile, laugh. He didn’t give a damn, as long as she was close, he felt happy with his ‘kitten’.

“Ren? Hello?” Evelyn waved her hand in front of his eyes and he swished it away, annoyed. She sighed, giving him a typical look. “You should think less and do more big guy. If you wait too long someone else will have her and you’ll never forgive yourself.”

“Just put my name on that damn list and go!”

“Thank you.” Evelyn smiled, even though she had already written his name down before even asking him and slipped away.

He groaned and sagged back in his chair, which creaked loudly as if complaining about how heavy he was. Renier rubbed his temples and his eyes. Just what am I going to wear so I don’t look like the Michelin guy?

He straightened up again when his phone rang and he answered.

“Renier?” She felt her cheeks grow warm when she hear d his voice on the other end of the phone and she caught herself toying with the cord. “I…I have Jeremy Fitch on the line for you. Shall I put him through to you?”

“Yes please.” Was his response and she could tell by his voice something was up.

“Here he comes.” She pressed the button and got Jeremy on the line again,

“Mister Fitch? I’m putting you through now. Have a nice day.”

“Thank you, May.” And with the push of another button, he was gone and May laid down the horn and stared at her screen for a few, sipping her coffee.

She looked up when Rosalie came in and threw her pack of cigarettes on the table. “I wish that fat-ass would keep his mail sorted out. It took me an hour to sort it all out and when I gave it to him he just ignored me!” She scoffed and sat down in the chair, in front of the computer across from May.

“I would appreciate it if you stop referring to him as ‘fat-ass’. His name is Renier.”

“And he’s a disgusting fat-ass. You aren’t convincing me you failed to notice that.” Rosalie’s hard, fake and painted nails clicked hard on the mouse as she went back to work.

May bit her lip and was about to snap at Rosalie when Evelyn entered the office. “I’ve just finished the list, it’s just you two, can you both come to the annual barbeque?”

“Is Martin coming too?” Rosalie tore the list out of Evelyn’s hand, much to her annoyance. “Yeah, I’m coming.”

“And you, May?” Evelyn ripped the paper out Rosalie’s hand and gave her an annoyed glare.

“Oh, I don’t know…” she trailed off in thoughts. Maybe if Renier was coming, she could get to know him, but if Martin was coming, she knew he wouldn’t leave her alone. He’d been chasing after her from the beginning.

“It will be fun, trust me May.” Evelyn reassured. “Shall I write your name on the list then? Renier is coming too?”

“Oh, that’ll save, he can finish the left-over’s of food.” Rosalie snickered and was playing with her blonde hair.

May’s eyes glittered dangerously and she felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise up. “Stop talking about him like that.”

“It’s true, you should’ve seen him stuff his face last year. It was disgusting.” Rosalie scrunched her nose up.

“Oi vae.” Evelyn swatted Rosalie over the head with the list. “Cut it out and get back to work, no one was asking you. I think you have some faxing work to do.”

Being her superior, Rosalie did as she was told but it was obvious she was annoyed, slamming the door shut.

“Don’t let it get to you, she’s…not a bad girl or anything but just…”

“Stupid? Shallow? Annoying?” May grumbled a little. “You can write my name on the list, I’ll be there. Just let me know what I need to wear and that whole mumbo jumbo.”

She looked out the window into the showroom where they displayed miniatures of the cranes, and tools like stone-cutters, vibratory plates and the sorts. There were photos on the wall of the company’s greatest projects to which they were the major supplier of tools and parties of previous years.

She always looked at the photos with Renier. She could almost see him ‘grow’ as she looked at the photos with him from a few years back, when he was already rather big, and to now. He was at least two heads taller than her and five times as wide. She just loved watching him waddle and how his belly jiggled slightly with each step. His voice was deep and loved hearing him laugh or see him smile as they talked about anything.

He just made her feel at comfort but she didn’t really know much of the real him, he always seemed to hide and take a step back then and most likely because he wasn’t interested. It made her heart ache because she knew very well she’d fallen in love with him but had no clue whether he felt the same way or not.

Evelyn, who had been watching her, chuckled, amused and walked to her office as she scribbled down May’s name on the list of attendees.

Thank you for the kind comments and the reputation ratings. I really appreciate it a lot because I didn't think people would read or like it.

-scratches back of head- If I have the time, this weekend, I'll rework the second chapter and when I'm satisfied, I'll post it up along with some pictures of myself because I don't have any photos of myself.

Chapter 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, May was tending to the administration of the archives in the attic.

It was a dusty, cramped space. The walls were lined with shelves and against the back wall stood boxes with Christmas stuff, a bar that was often used at parties or exhibitions and other things needed for a stand.

She picked up a few binders that contained the administration of last year and maneuvered between the closets, shelves and the narrow walkway. Sweat coated her brow when she looked down the steep, wooden steps and she took great care with each step so she wouldn’t fall. There was no railing to hold on too but she managed to get down without hurting herself. She walked down the hallway to another cramped space; the copy room.

The big copy-machine took up most of the room and there was a big table against the far wall with staplers and space to put papers or in this case, the binders on. And to the right wall was a closet, of which the doors had been removed, that held all the copying paper and other office supplies.

May scrunched up her nose as the dust from upstairs tickled and sneezed twice in a row. She grabbed a handkerchief and blew her nose, only to sigh when she heard his voice. “You’re not crying because you missed me I hope?”

Close behind her (a bit too close for comfort) stood a tall man with blonde, windswept hair, blue eyes and a tanned skin. He had a square jaw, straight nose and a dashing smile. He wore white jeans and a blue button-up shirt that emphasized his athletic body.

“Oh yes, I really missed you.” May rolled her eyes. “Can I help you with anything, Martin?”

“Well, not really help. I was more hoping that you would accompany me somewhere.” Martin smiled in this typical manner that somehow only annoyed her. “You see, I could pick you up and introduce you to some of our customers you haven’t met yet and I could take you home, unless you’d like to join me for some coffee, I know a nice café.”

And while at it, maybe accidentally drive to your own house so you can try to get me between your sheets?
May thought.

“That’s nice of you, but I’m going alone. I’ll manage just fine, I’m a big girl.” May kept her back turned to him, hoping he’d go away. She made to open the binder but Martin was persistent and took it from her, closing it.

“C’mon, don’t be so cold now. You’ll love it.” Martin said, keeping the binder out of May’s range. He looked over his shoulder, confused when the binder was ripped from his hand from behind. “Hey, Tubby!” He turned to Renier and slapped his protruding gut. “What are you doing here? This space is too cramped for the three of us, you know that right?”

May felt her blood boil as he just did not know when to stop!

Renier cocked his brow. “You know Martin, one would almost think you have nothing better to do than harass female co-workers while they have work to do. You might want to follow their example and get to work yourself as well.”

“I got my quota for the year, Babyface.” May could feel the tension rise and she felt increasingly uncomfortable. She looked at Renier with a pleading look. “Or did you want to ask May something?”

Renier looked from May to Martin again, a flush appearing on his fat cheeks. “Get. Back to work.”

Martin laughed, “Sure thing, big guy. Good luck.” May saw how Renier clenched his jaw when Martin prodded his belly hard as he walked out.

She looked at him and didn’t really know what to say. “Thank you. He was being his usual, annoying self.”

“He seems to have a talent for it, doesn’t he?” Renier cleared his throat and then remembered he had the binder in his hand. “I think this belongs to you.”

He then turned and walked away, leaving May to wonder. If he wanted to ask me something, why isn’t he doing it now? And what did he want to ask?

Though she went back to work, she kept thinking about it and hoped that he would come back to her about it, but he didn’t.

It bugged her so much that even when she was in bed later that night at home, snuggling up to her ‘cuddle-pillow’. She kept thinking about Lars that she dated a few months ago. He had been a charming big guy with dark hair and green eyes and was also a big man, though not as big as Renier.

She felt attracted to him, and she had the idea he felt the same way, but then he started acting weird.

“Listen, it’s sweet and all that you’re putting up with the fat guy, but I’m seriously looking for a relationship. It was nice to have you around, but let’s just stop because I know this type of game and it’s not funny.” May hadn’t even the chance to ask what he meant because he hung up, and when she tried calling him back, he didn’t answer.

Lars had thought that she was dating him out of pity or for sheer entertainment. It had hurt her a lot because it was not who she was and she had genuinely liked it.

Now, she felt afraid that she was falling hard for Renier and that it was going to happen all over again.
If I don’t find out soon if he feels something for me or not, I’m going to have to quit the job.

There was not one moment of the day that she wasn’t thinking about Renier, or wanted to be with him. She hugged her pillow tighter, whimpering. Slowly, her breathing become more calm and she finally fell asleep.

It was hot and humid the next day and though the air-conditioning in the showroom was functional Renier felt sweaty as the attendees seemed to stare at his enormous girth. When he was sure no one was looking, he would sometimes check to make sure he still looked at his best.

He smiled and shook hands with some of the customers that came in. It was dreadfully boring, but he made some small talk with them even if it took him effort to show interest. He beamed however when he saw Jeremy enter. They had been doing business with each other for a long time. To Renier, Jeremy was a sort father-figure; he was about sixty with his gray hair combed back, and a well-trimmed moustache. Sometimes, Renier would laugh, saying it would look great if he would wear a monocle, top hat and pocket watch.

Jeremy patted Renier’s shoulder. “It’s good to see you again. How’ve you been?”

“Been good. Been good. You?” Renier asked.

“Eh, arthritis is playing up, but it’s good.” Jeremy smiled. “But let’s not complain. Will the food be as good as it was last year?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t have much of an appetite to be honest. It’s too hot.” Renier was lying though. He’d eaten extra at lunch so he wouldn’t be hungry now, but his stomach was growling with hunger again. He flinched when a finger sharply jabbed him in his side, digging into the fat, followed by a hard slap.

“You and not hungry? I’m not convinced, Tubby.” Martin laughed.

Renier’s eyes narrowed. “Hello to you too Martin.” He grit his teeth. I swear, if that bastard touches me one more time I’ll throw him out the window.

“Have you seen May by any chance?” Martin completely ignored Renier’s annoyance or the fact that he was humiliating his colleague. Renier on the other hand was quite aware of people looking their way.

“Even if I had, I doubt I would tell you. Now, if you’ll excuse me—“ Renier turned around to head outside for a smoke, but he bumped into May midway his turn. She bounced off his belly but he caught her just in time, pulling her back to her feet.

He felt her body press against his for a brief moment and he looked into her eyes. She looked beautiful.

She had bound her thick, black hair into a braid and a few stray locks framed her face. For the occasion, she had put on some more make up than usual; some eyeliner, mascara and a light tinge of eye shadow. She wore an elegant, dark-blue dress that reached just over the knees with black short-heeled shoes. Her cheeks held a pink blush and she pulled away from him. “I-I’m so sorry, I--.”

“No, no, it’s okay.” Renier felt his cheeks grow red with embarrassment as people were looking in their direction, chuckling amongst themselves at his clumsiness.

“Hey Tubby, you might want to apologize to her, you knocked her over after all you know.” Martin put his arm around May, “Are you all right, my dear?”

“I’m fine, Ren doesn’t have to apologize.” May was still a bit flustered. Renier felt bad because she seemed to avoid eye contact with him “Where’s Evelyn?”

“I’ll take you to her.” Martin said and he walked away with her. He cast this glance over his shoulder at Renier that said, “She’s mine. I won. Back off.”

Outside at the back of the company, there usually stood lots of construction lifts, power-units, construction fences, racks with scaffolding pipes and boards and cranes, but all of that had made way for an enormous party tent.

Annoyed, May pulled her hand loose from Martin’s. “Do you have to be so nasty to him all the time?”

“He could’ve watched where he was going.” Martin said. “You could’ve hurt yourself.”

“He caught me, Martin. I can watch myself you know.” May responded and was about to say more, but Evelyn, who had been talking to the cooks, waiters and bartenders, had noticed them and walked over.

“There you are,” she said. “What took you so long?”

“Sorry, I was here in time but I accidentally bumped into Renier.” May felt her cheeks grow hot again as she remembered how he looked at her. His body was so big, and looked so strong, yet it was so soft and his big hands held her so firmly…. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” May couldn’t really place the smile on Evelyn’s lips. “I found the notes on your desk so we could run through the last things that had to be done. Will you get the guests?”

May nodded and turned around to do so but Martin followed her suit. “I can do this alone you know?” It’s hot, it’s humid, and he’s constantly hounding me. I’m getting a head ache.

“C’mon, you like my company.” Had it not been for the headache, May would’ve punched Martin for shamelessly putting his hand on her lower back and muted out his voice as he was rambling about going on a nice, long vacation next week.

She looked into the showroom where about a hundred people were mingling and she grew hesitant to call for their attention. Martin, however, saved her the effort and clapped his hands loudly. “Everybody! May I please have your attention so this lovely lady here can announce something?”

May felt her cheeks grow red when everyone looked in their direction. “Err… Thank you. Everyone, welcome to our annual barbeque. We hope that you will enjoy it. Please follow me to the back so we can begin.”

“Very good, doll face,” Martin patted her behind, which wasn’t noticed as they were walking in the middle of the crowd to the back.

But it was the drop for May. She slapped his hand away and glared at him. “Stop doing that."

He only grinned. “Have I ever told you how sexy you are when you’re angry or annoyed?”

Why that filthy, perverted asswipe! She angrily walked away from him through the crowd. I am so sick of him touching me all the time and harassing me!

Aye, the old version is on FF but I looked back at it not too long ago and was kinda displeased. It went too fast.

Okay, I agree that the end of Renier and May getting together went too fast in the OV, a bit of an inconsistency in pace and style versus the rest of the story.

But you did a very realistic and good portrayal of all the different office characters and their motivations which drew me into the story. So I hope to see more of that ... gladly in combination with a more slow-paced development between the two protagonists!

Yes, it indeed went way too fast and this really frustrated me.

n.n SAnk yuu about the characters, I think that's the most important in a story, no matter how 'well-written' it is, that you have credible characters with vivid but realistic personalities that bring a tale to life. After all, there's no such thing as perfect people in real life, so why in tales?
