I was sick as a dog all last week. Puking, butt-soup, aches and pains...nothing would stay down. Eating was halted for a good 4 days and my appetite still isnt what it used to be. When I finally came back to work, a few people made the comment that I must've lost some weight from the sickness. I'll admit, I was curious, so I weighed myself. The scale was about 10 pounds lighter than the last time Id weighed myself (which was about 2 weeks ago). When some of the girls I work with heard Id lost 10 pounds from being sick they congratulated me, liked Id accomplished something amazing. They even went so far as to say they wish they would get sick so they'd stop eating and lose weight. HELLO! I WAS SICK! I WAS IN PAIN AND SUFFERING! What happened was not healthy!!!n It was not a fun experience, I do not wish it on anyone! Why anyone would want to get sick is beyond me. People are really really screwy.

My mother-in-law is dealing with something similar. She's been ill with one thing or another for a while now, and has lost about 30 pounds in 30 months. Her main dr. is worried, but when she mentioned it to the specialists she saw a couple weeks ago, they basically told her any weight loss is good, and said nothing more about it.

I don't know why some people can be so clueless. Rapid weight loss is a sign of something wrong.

    Hope you're feeling better.

I totally understand your point, Gwarior. I remember even having to say to my own mother once, when she riding my ass about my weight, that isn't my being heavy preferable to being sick/sickly? Isn't it preferable to being a drug addict? I asked her if she would be happy to have a crack head for a daughter since most of them are skinny- and that seemed to be all that mattered to her.
So yeah, people are screwed in their mentality when it comes to weight- thinness no matter what the cost or consequence...... :(

Illness-related weight loss has happened to me several times in my life. The most recent was at the end of 2005, when I spent a week in the hospital with cellulitis. Over 6-8 weeks I dropped about 60lbs, as incredible as that sounds.

I felt weak for months after this little stint; the powerful antibiotics they had to pump into me thinned my hair and sapped my strength. I have since regained about 40 of those pounds; my color and hair are back to normal and so is my energy level. Am praying not to have another of these episodes for a long, long time.....

And yeah, I got a few stupid "compliments" as well. This society and these times are so totally and incredibly insane about weight and slenderness, I guess I couldn't expect anything else. But *I* know when I feel best, and most at home inside my skin, and believe me, it wasn't after that experience!!

I never lose weight when I'm sick. Thank God, I've never been seriously ill *knocking on wood*.

That isn't slightly sane. :/ I've got similar comments before - I lose weight dramatically when I'm sad. Pisses me off when it happens, too.

Get well soon n' all, if you aren't already.

It's sad that we're coming to this point in society. I got the stomach flu in 2001, and I was vomiting every 65 minutes. Yes, 65 to the button. It also lasted four days.

I lost two pants sizes while I was sick, I assume it was due to all the abdominal flexing and inability to eat. Now, I was still sort of hating my body at this point, but when people would say, "hey! You look GREAT, are you working out?" I would get really angry and explain, in detail, how it happened. Most people would get disgusted, but some girls looked on with envy. I don't know WHAT is wrong with people.

Because of that incident, I still cannot have anything to do with Pine-Sol (it was used to...clean up the hotel room I was stranded in). If you ask me, being a size 24 for 8 months or so after getting sick like that was NOT worth it.

It saddens me that people would choose horrible things like that over being healthy and a larger size.

Am I the only person in the world who doesn't lose a pound when sick, even with the butt-vomit variety of stomach flu?? LOL

Nope, I'm like that too. It has amazined a few times when my body has totally purged itself and then I've only been able to hand things like a bit of toast and apple sauce for a few days, and I find my weight has not perceptibly changed. How is that?

Try checking it the week after...... mine does that occasionally- doesn't seem to show weight loss on the scale right away but it does happen eventually

Last time I had the flu (back in '01, I think) I lost 30 pounds over the course of a week. I wish I had some photos; I looked like death incarnate.

My girlfriend lost around 35 lbs due to mono and a stomach ulcer, and she's just now starting to get better. It's been hard seeing her all sick for such a long time.
