Just saw that movie again after almost fifteen years! First saw it just after it came out. I was pretty traumatized by it then, but this time I could view it more dispassionately.
I guess the relevance for here is the scene in the beginning where the obese man gets forcefed to death. Remember how Detective Mills (Brad Pitt) instantly comes to a judgment ("how can a man let himself go like that?"). Mills is not a very sympathetic character anyway, but I really noticed that this time around.
Also, remember how John Doe justifies his murder? He was disgusted by the man's obesity and apparently excessive appetite! I mean, we know Doe is a little unhinged, but this victim wasn't even harming anybody else!
And the movie sort of presupposes that obesity can only be the result of too much eating, but I'm sure several people here can attest to the contrary.
Any thoughts?
