Quran burning and deaths in Afghanistan

i could never figure out why the church in Florida insisted on burning the Quran after being told it could mean lives lost abroad. as of today i think there are 9 people dead. was it worth it? why do it knowing full well it could cause lives? i know that i have a real problem understanding something so irresponsible.
