the film Pride, that is about part of the London LGBT community getting involved with a miner's strike in Wales. it's based on a true story. when I was watching I thought that there is a lot of talk about intersectionality in the fat community but there isn't really very much actually happening. many fat community members who are politically active are fat, female and quite a number belong to the LGBT community. that is intersectionality to a degree except it excludes a LOT of people when it comes to fat community support. it is exclusive of most people who aren't fat and don't have some type of sexual interest in fat people. it excludes people who don't have some kind of direct interest in fat issues.
when joining up with an entirely different group has been mentioned in the past I have heard people say it's because other people won't understand or might be prejudiced against fat people. but isn't that the point? that there might be an opportunity to educate, change minds and make allies we didn't have before? it might be time to make connections with groups that have nothing at all in common, at least not the surface, with fat people except being the focus of some kind of prejudice or powerlessness in society. do you think it's possible? what kind of allies would you think would be interesting?
