The USDA is starting a pilot program to test the use of SNAP benefits ("food stamps") to order groceries from online retailers. Shipping costs would not be eligible for payment through SNAP, of course. Seven online retailers are participating in the first phase of the pilot program. Most significant is Amazon, for orders from New York, New Jersey and Maryland.

I hope it works. I hope it rolls out nationwide. This is a fantastic idea, and it needs to be implemented as quickly as practicable. Security is essential, of course, as is verification that SNAP benefits are only used to pay for food items.
